It was once believed: The harder the steel, the harder it is to form. Thanks to high-strength steels such as ahss high-ductility, we at voestalpine have proven just the opposite. It has also often been said that high quality cannot be produced in mass volumes. That has also been proven wrong. A comprehensive modernization of Hot-dip Galvanizing Line 4 has made it possible to mass produce steels of more than 1000 MPa in repetitive manufacturing. The ever increasing demand in the automotive industry for these high-end light-weight steels can now be securely and economically met.

No more ugly fingerprints on household appliances, all made possible by the new multiface® treatment, which protects the surface of steel strip with a nearly invisible coating with excellent anti-fingerprint properties.

Construction of voestalpine's direct-reduction plant in Corpus Christi, Texas, is entering its final phase. The project is the largest investment to date by an Austrian company in the US. The plant is now in its last stages of assembly, with process control engineering being installed and selected plant parts already seeing test runs. It is therefore expected that the plant will commence operations largely on schedule over the course of summer 2016. Beginning with the next business year, the plant will produce two million tons of high-quality HBI (hot-briquetted iron, "sponge iron") for use as a sophisticated pre-material in steelmaking each year. For voestalpine, this represents another significant step in the expansion into the NAFTA area. The group currently operates 64 sites with around 3,000 employees in the free-trade area and generated a sales volume of roughly 1 billion euros last business year.

voestalpine has secured a major new contract in the ongoing economically challenging oil and gas industry for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project between Europe and Russia.

Construction of the voestalpine direct reduction plant in Texas, USA, is proceeding rapidly. Initial tests on sections of the plant have already commenced so that from today’s standpoint it can be assumed that production will start this summer, largely as planned. In future the Group will produce high-quality HBI (hot briquetted iron, or sponge iron), a sophisticated pre-material used in steel production, at the new site near Corpus Christi. Market demand for voestalpine HBI remains high. After having successfully secured long-term supply contracts with prestigious customers over the past months, voestalpine has recently signed another purchase contract which runs for several years with Mexican steel producer TYASA for several hundred thousand tons of the sponge iron from Texas.
