New secondary metallurgy for greentec steel

Das SekMet5-Projektteam zeigt vollen Einsatz.

The stage was successfully set

In order for construction to start, many cogs had to mesh – thanks to the efforts and commitment of numerous project team members. Construction of the hall extension is running as planned and a temporary solution has been created for tilting cradle 4, which keeps it in service in its current location until January 2026. The old façade has also given way: the demolition work in the area concerned has been completed and has created space for new construction.

Scope of the solid structural works

The upcoming work includes building services plant rooms for utilities, electrics, hydraulics and HVAC (heating, air-conditioning, ventilation) and plumbing. The future control room with social rooms for the site personnel will also be built. And the solid foundations that carry the heavy steelmaking equipment will of course also be cast.

Mit den Massivbauarbeiten wurde plangemäß gestartet.
Baufeld der SekMet5 – die Halle, einschließlich der Bunkergruppe wurden bereits vor dem Massivbau-Start im Rahmen der Hallenerweiterung errichtet.

Outlook

The solid structural work is scheduled for completion by April 2026. It will be followed by erection of the structural steelwork and installation of the steelmaking equipment.

About greentec steel

With greentec steel, voestalpine has an ambitious and viable phased plan in order to make its contribution to achieving the climate goals. In the first step, the Group plans to replace two blast furnaces with two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) from 2027. This involves an investment of around 1.5 billion euros.

With the partial changeover from the blast furnace to the electric steel route, by 2029, CO2 emissions will have been reduced by around 30 %. This equals a saving of almost 4 million metric tons of CO2 per year – or almost 5 % of Austria's CO2 emissions. greentec steel is thus the largest climate protection program in Austria.

With the two electric arc furnaces, from 2027, voestalpine can produce approx. 2.5 million tonnes of Co2-reduced steel annually, of which, 1.6 million metric tonnes in Linz and 850,000 metric tonnes in Donawitz. Find out more about greentec steel here.
