Ready for the future

In the long term, the aim of voestalpine is to increase the use of green hydrogen in steelmaking and to achieve CO2 carbon-neutral production by the year 2050. A clear action plan is a must if we want to reach this ambitious goal on schedule. Transformation of the Linz site into a hybrid steelmaking plant is the first step of the multi-phase project. The hybrid steelmaking plant will combine the advantages of the electric furnace and blast furnace routes and will make it possible for the Steel Division to remain a decisive step ahead in the field of product quality, product portfolio and reduced CO2 emissions in the coming years.

Clearance of the construction site

Everything is being prepared during the initial phase to make the Linz site ready for electric steelmaking technology. In March 2022, the Supervisory Board approved the necessary steps. The application for the construction permit for the EAF will be submitted as early as in March 2023. The construction site will be cleared in May according to schedule.
