5 November 2026 |

At the Apprentice Day held yesterday at the voestalpine headquarters in Linz, 380 apprentices from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland—all in their final year of training—had the opportunity to gain insights into operations beyond their own training locations and exchange ideas and experiences. The annual event underscores the high priority the voestalpine Group places on training its own skilled workforce. Worldwide, voestalpine is currently training approximately 1,500 young people in 30 different skilled occupations, including about 1,000 in Austria. With the start of the new training year, the steel and technology group has taken on 311 new apprentices in Austria.

Once again this year, a key part of the program at the Apprentice Day was the opportunity for personal interaction with the entire Management Board of voestalpine AG and the Group Works Council. Other highlights included a guided tour of the redesigned voestalpine Stahlwelt, a site tour, and a keynote address by Ali Mahlodj.

The annual Group Apprentice Day offers the opportunity to introduce these young people to our Group and key issues shaping the future, such as greentec steel, while also showing them how much we value their commitment. Our apprentices are the skilled workers of tomorrow and are therefore crucial to the future of our company. They contribute new ideas and perspectives and will play an active role in shaping voestalpine’s transformation in the coming years.

New technological requirements

voestalpine invests approximately EUR 100,000 in the training of each individual apprentice. Vocational training takes place in state-of-the-art training facilities and is continuously adapted to new technological requirements arising from an increasingly digitized work environment, as well as from the transition to electrified steel production as part of the greentec steel initiative. In addition to imparting technical knowledge, apprentices are offered numerous opportunities for personal and social development, such as language study trips, excursions, and project days.

311 new apprentices in Austria

With approximately 1,000 apprentices across Austria, voestalpine is the country’s largest industrial apprenticeship training provider and remains committed to training its own next generation of skilled workers, even in economically challenging times. At the start of the new training year this fall, 311 young people began their apprenticeships at voestalpine’s Austrian locations, including 153 in Upper Austria, 116 in Styria, and 42 in Lower Austria. It is particularly important to voestalpine to provide young people with security and prospects for the future—through an offer of continued employment after completing their apprenticeship and long-term career prospects.
