Our welding consumables support your productivity targets

The cement industry places some of the most demanding requirements on production equipment. From grinding raw materials in vertical and horizontal mills to firing at high temperatures  in kilns, the process is continuous, abrasive, and unforgiving on machinery.

For repair companies and maintenance technicians, this environment requires reliable solutions that quickly restore critical components, extend equipment life, and reduce costly downtime. This means that the surfaces of the vertical and horizontal mills must be protected to increase wear resistance during operation and to extend the service life of the production equipment.

Why wear protection from UTP?

Cement mills – whether vertical or horizontal – are exposed to extreme wear as they grind materials into fine cement powder.

The constant abrasion, combined with round-the-clock operation, leads to surface wear, performance loss, and increased maintenance demands.

To maintain productivity and avoid premature equipment failure, protecting and rebuilding wear surfaces is essential.

  • Hardfacing Stick Electrodes (SMAW):
Ideal for flexible, on-site repairs. These electrodes can be applied in all positions without needing to dismantle the equipment – perfect for emergency maintenance and localized wear.
  • Hardfacing Cored Wires (FCAW):
Best suited for overhauls and large-scale refurbishment . Cored wires offer higher deposition rates and faster welding times, helping to minimize downtime during scheduled maintenance. FCAW welding is therefore a very solid and economical solution for repairs.
  • Submerged Arc Welding (SAW):
An option for extensive surface rebuilding in a flat horizontal position for large-scale areas, if access and conditions permit.

Kiln maintenance – High heat, high risk:

In kilns, where extreme temperatures transform raw material into cement, thermal fatigue and cracking are common challenges. Due to the high temperature in the kiln and the furnace, fatigue cracks can occur, which may lead to larger cracks and even rupture of the kiln wall.

This problem can be solved by welding. UTP offers nickel-based stick electrodes that have been specifically engineered to repair cracks and restore structural integrity. These consumables offer strength, ductility, and crack resistance, ensuring safe and reliable kiln operation after repair.

Overlay of wear plates

Cost effective solutions in cement production also include protecting components with wear plates that are overlay-welded with specific material to combat the challenges of wear. Critical machine surfaces are often protected with high-performance wear-resistant solutions. WEARcore XD 62- O is an open-arc metal core  designed to resist grinding abrasion with low impact.

UTP offers a complete package of high-quality wear protection welding consumables for maintenance and repair, optimizing productivity in cement plants. Below you will find our product highlights for specific areas in the cement plants.
