Pipe mills produce pipes for a very wide scope of applications: for general construction/piling, and for pipelines for the oil & gas, hydrogen and water industries. The SAW process is often used for large diameter pipes in a two-run technique (DSAW), with two different welding techniques: spiral or longitudinal welds.

The two-run technique is a relative complicated welding process due to the high dilution rate and high heat input. In addition to the two-run technique, the multi-run technique can also be used with which the heat input can be reduced and the proportion of refined weld metal is increased in order to achieve certain mechanical properties.

Spiral or Helical (HSAW)

Longitudinale (LSAW)

voestalpine Böhler Welding is fully aware of the importance of a low defect rate, especially when the pressure is on manufacturing costs. We are focused on supporting pipe mills with procedure optimization:

  • Increased requirements
  • Critical mechanical properties
  • Quality issues, LME, diffusible hydrogen
  • Other needs (welding speed etc.)
  • Improving/developing new products and solutions

Some examples of specific product optimizations are:

  • a very low level of hydrogen and moisture pick up
  • using SAW flux without prior redrying (DRY SYSTEM packaging)
  • the high abrasion resistance of the flux grains (recycling)
  • a high Charpy toughness (with and without TiB micro-alloying)
  • good operative characteristics with the best slag removal
  • a single layer cladding technique with strip cladding (SASC and ESSC) in a clad pipe.

See selection table below for our welding consumables for two-run processes in pipe mills (wires and fluxes). Please refer to the corresponding general SAW combinations for multi-run applications.
