Largest high speed turnout

voestalpine Railway Systems is the world’s leading supplier of system solutions for railroad infrastructure and is currently
supplying the today world’s largest high-speed turnout for the British “HS2” project.

For the first time, a complete turnout, including all signal, point machines and asset monitoring components as well as small parts, has been designed in 3D. The 3D model of the integrated turnout system of this geometry comprises a total of more than 150,000 parts. The entire workflow in the technical departments for this design is controlled via the Teamcenter PLM system. This enables cross-location collaboration between all five companies involved under optimum conditions, so that all quality aspects and potential interface issues can be identified and resolved at an early stage.

The 3D model as the basis for the big picture

The complete design of a turnout in 3D has a number of other advantages:

  • Multi-body simulation: Multi-body simulation is used to determine movement, acceleration and forces, taking
    various operating parameters into account.
  • Finite element calculations: The finite element calculation is carried out to verify the operational stability of the
relevant components in accordance with customer requirements and international standards.
  • Digital twin: The so-called digital twin is an IFC format model for integration into the BIM customer model.

The high-speed turnout 60-25000/7350/∞-1:49.3 (T7350-49T) is designed as “double clothoid turnout” with clothoids at the entry and the exit of the branch track. Leading into the branch track the entry clothoid closes from a radius of 25,000 m to 7,350 m. This makes the turnout suitable for branching speeds up to 230 km/h. The clothoid at the exit opens from a radius of 7,350 m to the straight branch track. All limit values for jerk and acceleration are also strictly adhered to with this geometry. The jerk in this high-speed turnout is a sensational 152.4 mm/s. This corresponds to an impressive reduction of 88% compared to standard market values. The design speed for running on the main track is 400 km/h.

Technical Specifications:

  • Switch length (curve): 213.8455 m / Switch length: 66.448 m / Stock rail length: 67.20 m
  • Profile: 60E2 rail inclination of 1:20
  • Transition forging: 1:20 inclined
  • Material: 350HT
  • Superstructure type: Slab track
  • Actuating system: The turnout has 9+4 point machines and 9 end position detectors in the switch device. The requirement from the customer specification to achieve a changeover time of </= 9 seconds is fulfilled.

Monitoring system:

  • A total number of 80 sensors are used in the turnout itself and in the point machines to record data from various parameters in real time and to process information about the status of the turnout system using software systems. This enables efficient, preventive maintenance and the reduction of maintenance costs over the entire service life of the infrastructure asset, as well as increasing availability and operational safety.

Swing-nose crossing:

  • Total length of 29.67m
  • Construction: low block tip with main heel block and main base plate
  • Inner wing rail fastening
  • Separate point machine for each setting level

Fastening:

  • Elastic ribbed base plate ERL with different stiffnesses to ensure consistent rail deflection in all areas of the turnout.

Train speed:

  • Design speed: 400 km/h
  • Operating speed: main track: 360 km/h / divergent track: 230 km/h
