Health, Safety, Environment & Energy (HSEE)

voestalpine Railway Systems has taken measures towards continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental conditions at all plants of the Business Unit for many years. True to our corporate policy, it is not only our aim to meet the respective national legal requirements, but also to implement voestalpine Railway Systems HSEE-Minimum Standards that go beyond that within the Business Unit!

Our goals

  • Optimized locations with regard to occupational safety, health protection and the environment.
  • Focus on the ongoing improvement of energy and raw material efficiency with the aim of avoiding or reducing direct and indirect CO2 emissions.
  • Particular attention to ecology, lifetime and resource conservation in the development and optimization of our products and services - including the creation of corresponding Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) with special attention to energy and CO2 data as the basis for holistic decisions.
  • Promotion of the circular economy and avoidance or high-grade recycling of production-related waste.
  • Continuous further development of the integrated management system.

Energy efficiency. We are particularly pleased with the successes we have already achieved in the areas of energy efficiency and CO2 reduction. The fact that the Zeltweg site has already reduced its non-biogenic Scope 1+2 greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 90% compared to the base year 1996 underscores the pioneering role played by voestalpine Railway Systems. Naturally, we want to continue to develop this important area at our subsidiaries.

Safe working conditions. Equally important to us is the provision of safe working conditions with the aim of avoiding occupational accidents and work-related illnesses. We have succeeded in reducing the accident rate (voestalpine LTIFR) by over 50% since the indicator was introduced in BY 2015/16!

The large number of successful measures also led to national and international awards, such as for two times the European Good Practice Award (for health and safety at workplaces) and also for two times the European EMAS Award (for environmental management performance).
