What is IRIS Certification®?

IRIS Certification® is an internationally recognised certification system for the railway industry and was developed by the European industry association UNIFE. The certification system comprises a certification process, an assessment methodology, an audit tool and defined requirements in accordance with ISO 22163:2023. The international standard combines the fundamental principles of ISO 9001 with specific requirements for the railway sector.

These include, amongst others:

  • Project management in the railway sector.
  • Reliability and availability of systems.
  • Life cycle and cost management.
  • Obsolescence management.

The certification covers the entire value chain – from development and procurement through to production and maintenance. The aim is to continuously improve and safeguard efficient and sustainable railway systems worldwide.

Why is IRIS Certification® so important?

The significance of IRIS Certification® goes beyond a mere quality award. It creates tangible added value for customers, partners and the entire market.

  • Compliance with global standards

IRIS Certification® in accordance with ISO 22163:2023 confirms compliance with the specific requirements for a quality management system in the railway sector.

  • Holistic value creation

Consistent quality and transparency throughout the entire value chain strengthen long-term partnerships.

  • Long-term reliability

Products are designed for a long service life and feature systematic obsolescence and spare parts management.

  • Cost and risk minimisation

Integrated project management minimises quality issues and reduces lifecycle costs.

  • Optimised processes

Reduced effort in additional supplier audits by major system integrators accelerates project workflows.

  • Continuous improvement

Performance assessments drive the ongoing optimisation of the quality management system and customer focus.

A successful IRIS Certification® is a significant milestone – not only for the companies themselves, but also for the further development of uniform quality standards in the global rail sector.
