voestalpine Railway Systems expands in Canada and showcases Rail Innovations at InnoTrans 2026

voestalpine is further expanding its global presence in the Railway Systems business segment and is building a new production facility for high-quality turnout and rail components in Thorold, Ontario (Canada). At the same time, a long-term supply agreement for the locally manufactured turnout systems was signed with Canadian National (CN), Canada’s largest freight rail company.
With this expansion phase, voestalpine is consistently continuing its successful local-for-local strategy and, in the run-up to InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, is once again underscoring its position as the global market leader in complete railway infrastructure systems. At the world’s largest trade fair for transportation technology, the Group will showcase product highlights in the field of digital and integrated technologies for modern rail tracks from September 22 to 25.
For years, voestalpine Railway Systems has held a leading position worldwide as a full-service provider of railway infrastructure systems. This is also the case in North America, where the company currently operates 14 locations in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, providing high-quality rail solutions for freight, industrial, light, heavy-haul, commuter, and high-speed rail services.
Now, another production facility is being built in southern Ontario, which will also create about 30 new jobs.
Customer focus and increased order volume in Canada
For years, we have relied on our successful local-for-local strategy in dynamic markets such as North America to provide even better local service to our customers. These efforts are concentrated in high-tech sectors such as railway infrastructure. With the current expansion of our production capacity in Canada, we are not only strengthening our position in a strategically important market but also increasing our flexibility and competitiveness through our regional presence.
Production at the new plant will be ramped up gradually and will initially focus on components for turnouts and light rail systems. The facility is scheduled to be fully operational in the Northern fall of 2027.

With this expansion of production, we will be able to provide even more high-quality, locally produced solutions in the future.
In addition to the current project in Canada, voestalpine Railway Systems’ high-tech products are in demand for other major rail projects around the world. Most recently, the company has secured supply contracts for Rail Baltica as well as long-term agreements with Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways, among others.
System Solutions and Digitalization take center stage at InnoTrans 2026
At InnoTrans in Berlin—the world’s leading trade fair for transportation technology—voestalpine Railway Systems will showcase new product highlights in integrated railway infrastructure systems at a 1,000 m² booth from September 22 to 25.
The focus is on the entire life cycle: from rails, turnouts, and fastening systems to digital monitoring and diagnostic solutions as well as asset and maintenance management. Visitors to the booth will find comprehensive solutions for mixed-traffic and freight transport, high-speed rail lines, urban mobility, and metro systems, all of which voestalpine provides as a one-stop shop.
Highlights include new frog technologies for turnouts that reduce wear and improve line availability, innovative track and fastening systems, digital sensor technology and diagnostic solutions as well as intelligent point machines and signaling technology. Sustainability will be featured as a running theme throughout the entire trade show presentation. With greentec steel, voestalpine is demonstrating its path toward steel production with significantly lower CO₂ emissions and underscoring the importance of sustainable materials for the railway infrastructure of the future.
