Digital transformation in track management: zentrak makes rail infrastructure smart

9 June 2026 |

What is the actual condition of my track? Where exactly is it located, and when does it require maintenance? In practice, this very transparency is usually lacking. Data is often fragmented and difficult to access, leading to inefficiency. zentrak, the digital platform from voestalpine Railway Systems, transforms traditional railway infrastructure into a smart, connected system. With the help of zentrak, every meter of track continuously provides data, detects damage early on, and helps to plan maintenance effectively. This, in turn, extends the service life of the infrastructure.

From data silos to an intelligent ecosystem

At the heart of zentrak lies the digitalization and interconnection of all relevant information throughout the entire lifecycle of rail infrastructure. Using robotic automation, so-called Digital Touch Points are applied to the rail infrastructure. All asset information can be accessed quickly and easily by scanning the Digital Touch Point in the zentrak CUSTOMER PORTAL. The serialization of all track components, combined with fully digital documentation in the zentrak CUSTOMER PORTAL, creates a comprehensive digital representation of the entire network.

Theresa Passath – Head of Business Development & Sales, voestalpine Digital Track Management

zentrak simplifies railway asset management by serializing all track components and providing the complete digital documentation in one portal - the zentrak CUSTOMER PORTAL. From day one, we are optimizing the asset lifecycle with our software solution. Streamlining data communication and enabling predictive insights. The result: more efficient processes, smarter decisions and real value for our customers.

Real-time data as the foundation for predictive maintenance

zentrak goes far beyond mere data collection. The platform enables the condition of tracks to be monitored, analyzed, and interpreted. Mobile measurement technologies and stationary measurement checkpoints provide precise information on rail loads, wear, and vehicle track interactions.

Franziska Schneditz-Bolfras – Product Manager, voestalpine Signaling Austria

The goal is to turn real time data into smarter decisions. Predictive maintenance in the railway context means shifting from a reactive to a data driven approach by using real time condition data from your assets. You can plan your maintenance activities accordingly.

Data analysis as the key to foresight

To ensure that the vast amount of data can be intelligently analyzed, all modules within the zentrak ecosystem are interconnected. Modern data analytics help to make complexity within the track system understandable and to translate them into clear and plannable action.

The future of track management is digital. That means data driven, transparent and predictive. And that's why we need clear performance insights.

Digital track monitoring with RFID

With the help of technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), each rail can be uniquely identified, located, and monitored for its condition throughout its entire service life. This allows for early detection of which components require special attention and where maintenance is needed. This results in lower maintenance costs, higher availability of rail vehicles, and overall increased operational reliability.
