Axle Counting as the basis for modern train detection

18 May 2026 |

Axle counting is considered as one of the most advanced methods for monitoring track sections and detecting trains. Unlike traditional track circuits, which rely on the electrical conductivity of the rails, axle counting systems use wheel sensors mounted on the track. These sensors detect the axles of passing trains and track entries and exits to determine whether the track is occupied or clear.

The advantages of this technology are particularly evident in challenging environments: In poor ballast conditions, during electrical interference, or under extreme weather conditions, axle counting delivers reliable results and is therefore indispensable for safe and efficient rail operations.

One System. Multiple Railway Applications.

Our axle counting system offers flexible configurations to support operational and safety requirements across diverse railway networks, such as:

  1. mainline and station track vacancy detection,
  2. level crossing protection,
  3. activation and triggering systems,
  4. block dependences (block systems),
  5. secondary track vacancy detection system for CBTC,
  6. and – of course– tailored to individual customer-specific requirements.

UniAC[2]: Design and Operation

The UniAC[2] axle counting system from voestalpine Railway Systems is divided into indoor and outdoor modules. The indoor modules are located either in a signal room (centralized configuration) or in an outdoor enclosure along the track (decentralized configuration). UniAS wheel sensors with a detachable cable detect wheels entering or exiting the monitored track section. Together with a modular and flexible mounting clamp that can be attached to virtually any type of rail, these components form the outdoor part of the axle counting system.

A future-proof solution for rail transport

With UniAC[2], voestalpine Railway Systems combines modern technology, high reliability, and easy integration. Especially in light of growing demands on infrastructure and digitalization, this axle counting system makes a significant contribution to safe and efficient rail networks.

The Advantages of the UniAC[2] Axle Counting System

  • Higher Integration Readiness
The system is ready for EULYNX Baseline 4 integration and communicates securely without relying on additional cryptographic devices. This simplifies systems and reduces integration overhead.
  • A simple, one module hardware concept for spare part control

One universal multi-purpose module (AXM) can perform all required system functions depending on configuration. This drastically reduces spare part inventories and simplifies logistics.

  • Built-in cybersecurity by design (no external crypto boxes)

UniAC[2] incorporates embedded cybersecurity features, including crypto authentication modules and hardware-level separation of safety and security.

  • Broader environmental tolerance and trackside robustness

The system operates reliably even within extended temperature ranges in indoor installations (-40 °C to +80 °C) and outdoor installations (-40 °C to +85 °C), with IP68-certified sensors.

  • Faster setup and reduced installation time (Plug & Play)

UniAC[2] is based on a Plug & Play concept that minimizes installation time, cable lengths, and complexity. Configuration is performed via the GUI-based Application Architect, which offers predefined parameter sets and intuitive workflows.

  • Higher redundancy and system availability in core design

Redundancies across hardware, software, and communication layers significantly increase system availability.
