Innovation in railway asset management: voestalpine Railway Systems as a pioneer in the EU Rail FP3-IAM4Rail project

20 May 2026 |

voestalpine Railway Systems is proud to be part of the European research project FP3-IAM4Rail as part of the Europe's Rail (EU Rail) initiative. The project is dedicated to developing a new generation of intelligent solutions for integrated asset management in the railway sector. The aim is to use modern technologies to monitor infrastructure and vehicles more efficiently, extend the service life of turnouts and, at the same time, increase safety and availability in the rail network.

About FP3-IAM4Rail

Within the project, voestalpine Railway Systems is working with partners from across Europe on innovative demonstrators for railway systems. FP3-IAM4Rail comprises a total of seven integrated demonstrators that test new approaches to infrastructure monitoring and control. Data from various sources is combined, linked to decision support systems, and integrated into traffic management systems. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital twins, and automated maintenance approaches play a central role here.

voestalpine Railway Systems, together with its project partner ADIF, has installed two intelligent turnout demonstrators: a standard turnout for mixed traffic and a high-speed turnout. Both systems were equipped with innovative monitoring technologies from voestalpine Railway Systems.

Sensors were installed on particularly stressed components of the turnouts to record the condition of the infrastructure in real time. The collected data makes it possible to detect deviations or potential faults at an early stage — before they lead to disruptions in rail traffic. This enables operators to plan maintenance measures in a targeted manner, use resources efficiently, and increase the availability and safety of the network.

The initial data from the demonstrators is already providing valuable insights: condition developments and load peaks can be analyzed in real time. This enables infrastructure operators to react more quickly, optimize maintenance processes, and further increase the reliability of rail systems.

We are very proud of the progress we make together. The Europe's Rail project shows how European cooperation and innovation help building a smarter, safer, and cleaner future for all of us.
