wellDun, a new Group company

Wood or styrofoam are currently used for securing steel coils. These systems incur high material costs, are impractical, and are complex to use. wellDun addresses this specific problem. Its innovative, simple-to-use cargo securing solution utilizes high-performance corrugated cardboard. It proves that sustainable logistics can also make compelling economic sense.

Production-ready container transport solution

The high-quality, water-resistant bonded cardboard is reusable and recyclable. It delivers a tangible reduction in CO₂ emissions for the steel industry. At the same time, this patented system opens up attractive opportunities for a profitable circular economy. This is largely due to the sustainable material requiring no special disposal procedures.

High-tech systems

The modules are engineered for securely bracing heavy cylindrical industrial goods, such as steel coils. They are designed as durable, high-tech products. wellDun systems withstand harsh conditions at sea, on the road, and on rail tracks. They are built to fit standard transport containers. This eliminates the need for specialized railcars. Containers can also switch flexibly between trains and trucks. This approach increases operational efficiency while driving sustainability.

Future potential

The system was originally designed for transporting steel coils in ISO containers aboard ocean-going vessels. It has since undergone further development. Up to 30 metric tons of cargo can now be secured. This applies to deep-sea containers as well as transport units for road and rail. Additional applications are already under development. In June, this project became the first spin-off from the innovation hub's new business incubator (nbi). Since the project launch in October 2023, the NBI team managed technical development, built a comprehensive business plan, and prepared the market entry strategy. Five employees are now dedicated to  

commercializing this innovation externally. This follows its successful implementation within the Steel Division

Safely stowed

wellDun is on track to become the world's leading cargo bracing system for economically minded and ecologically responsible industrial customers. It will permanently transform the multimodal transport of heavy industrial goods. It will also make logistics processes significantly more environmentally friendly.

greentec steel

The greentec steel project of voestalpine is an ambitious step-by-step plan that makes a valuable contribution to the achievement of the climate goals. As a first step, the voestalpine Group plans to replace two blast furnaces with two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) by the year 2027. The investment volume amounts to roughly 1.5 billion euros.   

Carbon emissions can be reduced by up to 30% as early as 2029 by making this switch from the blast furnace to the EAF. This corresponds to a savings of nearly 4 million tons of CO2 per year, amounting to nearly 5% of the carbon emissions in Austria. This makes greentec steel the largest climate protection program in Austria. 

The two electric-arc furnaces will enable voestalpine to produce roughly 2.5 million tons of carbon-reduced steel by the year 2027, roughly 1.6 million tons in Linz and 850,000 tons in Donawitz. Learn more about greentec steel here.
