Next milestone for greentec steel: Centrepiece of the electric steel plant arrives at the construction site
The furnace vessels and furnace portal were manufactured in Turkey and then transported to Linz by water. The transport posed particular challenges for everyone involved. The current low water levels on the Danube made transporting the heavy loads considerably more difficult. Nonetheless, the components were successfully delivered to Linz on time, keeping the project on schedule.

The dimensions of the delivered components are also impressive: Each of the two lower vessels of the electric furnace weighs 53 tonnes, while each of the upper vessels weighs more than 60 tonnes. Following their arrival at the heavy-load port in Linz, the components were transported to the construction site using special heavy-haul vehicles..
The electric arc furnace is the technological centrepiece of the new plant. The successful delivery of all components is the result of months of planning and successful collaboration with our project partner, Primetals Technologies. The project is now entering its next crucial phase: completion of the entire plant.

With the plant equipment now delivered, the project is entering its next crucial phase: the assembly and completion of the electric arc furnace. Commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2027. Once fully operational, the plant will produce around 1.6 million tonnes of steel annually with a significantly smaller CO2 footprint.
With greentec steel, Austria’s largest climate protection programme, voestalpine is driving forward the gradual transition to electric steel production. This is expected to reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by up to 30 percent by 2029 compared with 2019 levels.
