Orthopedic components require approved biocompatible BÖHLER steels with high fatigue strength and corrosion resistance. Key quality features include ultra-clean materials, full traceability, controlled heat treatment, and rigorous testing for reliable implant performance.

Orthopedic applications in medical technology, such as implants, bone screws, plates, and surgical instruments, require approved materials with the highest levels of reliability, biocompatibility, and mechanical performance. These components are subject to complex loading conditions, including cyclic stresses, wear, and exposure to body fluids, while maintaining strict requirements for sterility and long-term stability. Material requirements therefore focus on high fatigue strength, corrosion resistance, fracture toughness, and excellent surface quality to support osseointegration and minimize wear or adverse biological reactions.

BÖHLER high-performance steels and alloys are specifically developed and approved to meet these demanding orthopedic requirements. Advanced stainless steels, including austenitic, martensitic, and precipitation-hardened grades, provide an optimized balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and machinability. Produced using advanced vacuum melting technologies, BÖHLER materials ensure superior cleanliness, low inclusion content, and homogeneous microstructures, which are critical for long-term implant performance. Key quality features include precise control of chemical composition, certified traceability, and validated heat treatment processes to guarantee reproducible properties. Extensive testing, including fatigue, corrosion, and surface integrity verification, ensures compliance with stringent medical standards. BÖHLER materials support safe, durable, and high-precision orthopedic solutions.

  • BÖHLER P513

BÖHLER P513 is a weldable, non-magnetic, austenitic stainless steel with resistance to seawater and intercrystalline corrosion. It offers the best abrasion resistance of all stainless steels. The corrosion resistance of BÖHLER P513 is better than that of conventional austenitic Cr-Ni steels (type 304), and even better than Cr-Ni-Mo steel (type 316) under standard test conditions against chloride pitting, stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. BÖHLER P513 is an alloy with a high silicon and manganese content and added nitrogen, which also works well at high temperatures around 1800 ºF. Silicon and manganese prevent wear and scuffing even in the annealed condition. Higher strengths can be achieved by cold forming, but this does not significantly improve abrasion resistance. BÖHLER P513 is used in the aerospace, food and pharmaceutical, oilfield, petrochemical, surgical and chemical industries, e.g. for valve stems and valve seats, fastening systems, shielding, chain drive systems, pins, bushings and roller bearings, wear rings and pistons in pumps.
