Il processo di saldatura TIG è sinonimo di saldatura di alta qualità ed è utilizzato per applicazioni impegnative come la saldatura di tubazioni, l'industria alimentare, i recipienti a pressione, l'aviazione e molte altre.

Per ottenere un risultato GTAW perfetto, è necessario considerare diversi parametri per l'elettrodo di tungsteno, come la composizione del materiale dell'elettrodo a base di tungsteno, il diametro, l'angolo di punta e la forma o il carico termico. I parametri di saldatura possono essere impostati sulla base di tabelle standard o utilizzando saldatrici sofisticate dotate di funzioni intelligenti, come la Böhler Welding EasyArc.

L'ambito di applicazione va dalla saldatura di sezioni sottili di acciai non legati e medio legati e di acciai inossidabili alla saldatura in radice di alta qualità per lamiere e tubi più spessi. Il GMAW è il processo preferito per materiali non ferrosi come alluminio, magnesio o leghe di rame.
