The martensitic benchmark in lightweight automotive design

The voestalpine Steel Division is taking martensitic steels to the next level. Our new MS1500 grade not only meets the targets of VDA 239-100 but also represents the highest-strength cold-forming grade in our entire portfolio. This material combines maximum strength with superior flatness, unlocking new potential for pioneering lightweight structures.

The next generation of martensitic steels

With the new MS1500, we have decisively advanced this material class. Our goal was a martensitic steel with a minimum tensile strength of 1,500 MPa pursuant to VDA 239-100. By optimizing our alloying strategy, fine-tuning the heat treatment, and utilizing state-of-the-art gas-jet cooling technology, we have successfully realized a material that meets all required parameters while ensuring reliable processing. We haven't just reached a new strength level; we’ve created a martensitic steel that sets new standards in cold forming.

Flatness redefined

Flatness is a critical parameter, especially in high-strength martensitic grades. The gas-jet-cooled MS1500 excels across the board: 

  • Stable process, stable quality: A precisely calibrated production process combined with state-of-the-art equipment ensures exceptional flatness straight from the production facility.
  • Technological advantages in the gas-jet cooling process: gentle cooling results in a smoother surface free of disruptive internal stresses, a significant leap over the water-quenching processes frequently used in industry.

For maximum safety in a crash

The high strength of MS1500 makes it the perfect choice for components that must resist deformation and provide high intrusion resistance in the event of an impact. Typical applications include the following:

  • Crossmembers and reinforcements in the floor pan
  • Crash members and bumpers
  • Structural elements for battery boxes
Wherever safety, strength and functional stability are paramount, MS1500 opens up new lightweighting options.
