For 10 years now, ultralights made by voestalpine have been synonymous with innovation and passion for lightweight automotive design.

A field of competence with a high standard

When voestalpine launched ultralights in 2015, the focus was on a clear vision: to drive lightweight automotive design and push the boundaries of what is possible with forward-looking steel strategies. What began as an ambitious idea quickly developed into an innovation engine that has had a lasting impact on the automotive industry.

An anniversary clip with a wink

The art of rethinking steel

At the heart of ultralights is the concept of making vehicles lighter, more efficient and safer with steel. To do this, our competence center pools voestalpine’s lightweight expertise: high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, cutting-edge hot-forming technologies and tailored solutions for everything from body-in-white and seat structures to battery boxes. We focus on high-ductility grades like FH steels—which masterfully blend high strength with superior formability—and phs-scalefree®, the ultimate solution for B-pillars, structural interiors and large-scale components like door rings. Through relentless evolution, we’ve created materials and processes that redefine technical excellence and fuel the future of mobility.

With enthusiasm and deep-seated expertise, the ultralights competence field has developed materials and processes that set new benchmarks for modern mobility.
The ultralights steels provide a vital foundation for the future of electric mobility.

A decade of innovation

Looking back on ten years of ultralights reveals an incredible journey. Each new steel grade and innovative forming process has pushed the boundaries of design and manufacturing. We’ve also been a driving force in the EV revolution: lightweighting extends range, advanced steel grades maximize crash safety, and optimized battery housings protect the heart of the vehicle. By enabling significant weight savings, high-strength steels are making vehicle concepts more efficient than ever. Today, ultralights is an essential pillar of the automotive future.

Lightweighting is responsibility

ultralights makes tomorrow’s mobility not just more efficient, but more sustainable. Every pound saved reduces energy consumption and boosts overall vehicle performance. With greentec steel, we’re taking it to the next level: the entire product portfolio is supplied in CO₂-reduced versions. This makes our steel doubly sustainable—delivering weight savings on the road and a significantly smaller carbon footprint at the production site. Since 2022, our steels and the ultralights range have been available in the greentec steel edition, backed by close collaboration with our partners.

All ultralights steels are available in the greentec steel edition—a major milestone for sustainable lightweight solutions.
We’re stronger together as a team: The ultralights team looks back on 10 successful years with pride and excitement for the decade to come.

A milestone driven by people

Behind a decade of success is more than just tech—it’s a powerhouse of human expertise and passion. ultralights wouldn't be where it is today without the dedication of our engineers, developers, and production teams. Their vision and courage to disrupt the status quo have defined us. Partnering with elite institutions like the University of Leoben, Leoben Materials Center and the Technical University of Munich ensures that our innovation engine never stops.
ultralights is proof of what happens when passion meets innovation. I’m proud to be part of this journey and I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years will bring.

Leading the way into the next decade

Today, ultralights by voestalpine is synonymous with quality, dynamism and progress. We are relentlessly pushing the boundaries of automotive lightweighting with new products like MS1500—soon to be available with an electro-galvanized finish—and the ongoing refinement of our HD grades. Moving forward, our focus is crystal clear: sustainable mobility. Steel has cemented its place as the most cost-effective and high-performance material on the market. With our innovative solutions, it will remain the key material for the mobility of tomorrow.

Happy Anniversary! Here’s to a mobile future that’s even more efficient, safer and more sustainable—thanks to ultralights.
