greentec steel Construction Site News: The "doghouses" are up!

2 April 2026 |

The snow has melted, and temperatures are rising. We took this opportunity to capture some springtime scenes at our EAF construction site. Richard Kern, Risk and Claims Manager, provides an update on current progress. The focus is on the “Elephant House,” along with the “Doghouses.” These two terms aren’t self-explanatory.

In a technical context, a “doghouse” surrounding a unit (in our case, the electric arc furnaces) refers to a protective enclosure. The term comes from English and literally means doghouse, but is used in industry to refer to special enclosures or covers.

Our “doghouses” are permanently mounted enclosures that surround the future EAF units in order to …

  • … reduce noise (sound insulation)
  • … shield against heat or dissipate heat in a controlled manner
  • … protect personnel from moving parts
  • … support fire or explosion protection (depending on the design)

The “Elephant house” is the protective enclosure surrounding the “Doghouse”; in our case, this is the furnace hall.

The following images provide an overview of the ongoing progress at the construction site.
