The fourth of a total of eight concrete construction packages was completed this summer. The fourth of a total of eight concrete construction packages was completed this summer. At the same time, when it comes to steel construction, you can already see from a distance that an impressive soundproof wall has now been erected in front of the halls under construction—there’s a lot going on at the Donawitz plant site!

The furnace hall has been visible on the construction site for quite some time, and the alloying hall has also been clearly visible for several weeks. Construction of the scrap hall is still pending, though the associated infrastructure is already visible. Where large projects take shape, corresponding complexities inevitably follow:

“Among the biggest challenges are the cramped construction site and the tight timeline,” agree Achim Cortolezis and Robert Truschner. Both work in the Plant Projects/Plant Expansion department at voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH. Investment and maintenance projects are their specialty, with Achim Cortolezis leading the civil engineering team and Robert Truschner leading the “steel construction” team. Together, they form the foundation for the plant construction surrounding the transformation and construction of the electric arc furnaces.

Construction packages – What do they entail?

The various construction packages in concrete construction refer to the consolidation of many small projects—they include steps that align logistically, strategically, and chronologically. Steel construction literally builds upon the foundations of concrete construction, but here the projects are not divided into construction packages but rather into areas or facilities.
