Automotive Components makes the Green Factory a reality

Green Factory Header

The voestalpine Automotive Components companies manufacture car parts for the global automotive industry. As a specialist in cold and hot forming as well as tailor welded blanks, they are helping to shape the future of mobility - and doing so in a very sustainable manner. The Green Factory is the target image.

With full power to zero! Zero CO2 is our goal. The entire Metal Forming Division of voestalpine, which also includes the companies in the Automotive Components business unit, has one mission: the entire division will produce CO2-neutrally by 2035. The Green Factory is our target image. We achieve this with a holistic approach and interaction across all processes,” says Klaus Pammer, VP Sustainability

Energy: Natural, environmentally responsible

Without energy, nothing works in production and administration. The “Co₂untdown to Zero” concept provides clear guidelines: 1. Save energy, 2. Switch to green electricity, 3. Generate renewable energy yourself. The direction is the right one: For example, the plant in Bunschoten has the second largest PV system in the Netherlands with 35,000 solar panels. At the location in East London/South Africa, the electricity generated by the PV system is already stored in batteries. The plant is therefore largely energy self-sufficient and can continue to produce even during times of government power cuts

Smart solutions above all

Achieving CO₂ neutrality requires thinking and acting in all directions. An excerpt of the measures that have already been implemented and are in progress demonstrate the companies' commitment: The waste heat from production is used to heat the administration. LED lighting replaces conventional light sources in the factories. E-transport vehicles and forklifts are being promoted in internal logistics. When transporting goods, the bundling of quantities of goods is optimized and the switch from trucks to more environmentally friendly transport options is examined.

Prematerial: voestalpine is a pioneer

The production of the raw materials is already an important factor in reducing emissions. The voestalpine Group is making decisive progress here. By 2050, all steel production will be CO₂ neutral. The switch to electric arc furnaces or the in-house production of green hydrogen are examples of this. The voestalpine Automotive Components companies already offer solutions made from steels with a reduced CO₂ footprint.
