Engineering Steels - Martensitic Precipitation Hardening (Maraging) Steels

Maraging steels are high-strength, tough steels of the Fe-18% Ni-Co-Mo type. Strengths of over 2000 MPa can be achieved with a simple, low-distortion heat treatment. These steels are used in lightweight construction in the aerospace industry, in mechanical engineering and toolmaking, e.g. for fasteners, shafts, springs and gear parts.

Maraging steels are ultra-high-strength steels of the Fe-18% Ni-Co-Mo type that achieve strengths of over 2000 MPa with a simple, low-distortion heat treatment. However, these steels are not corrosion-resistant.
Maraging steels are melted in a vacuum induction furnace and then remelted in a vacuum arc furnace due to their high alloy content, particularly their high titanium and aluminium content.
Applications for such steels include mechanical engineering, e.g. fastening elements, shafts, springs, gears and lightweight construction, e.g. in the aviation industry, but also for components in tools and machine tools.

  • BÖHLER V250

BÖHLER V250 is a premium aircraft-quality, maraging alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings and stock for forging. In contrast to heat treatable steels its outstanding tensile properties are not due to a hardened structure with relatively high carbon content, but to precipitation of intermetallic phases from a ductile nickel bearing matrix containing almost no carbon.  These products have been used typically for parts requiring through hardening, without quenching, to a minimum yield strength of 247 ksi (1700 MPa) and where such parts may require welding during fabrication, but usage is not limited to such applications. E.g highly stressed components for the aircraft and rocket industries.
