Additive manufacturing as an approach to reducing overall costs

The next generation of injection molds

BÖHLER M789 AMPO

Böhler M789 AMPO is a maraging steel that combines the strength properties of 1.2709 with the corrosion resistance of a 17-4PH. This patent-pending brand, is easy to print without any preheating and achieves a hardness of 52 HRC by simple heat treatment. In addition, this material is characterized by excellent polishability. Suitable for any application where hardness greater than 50 HRC and corrosion resistance are required, such as applications in plastic injection molding with near-contour cooling.

ANALYSE
By adopting additive manufacturing and implementing near-contour cooling, Eisenhuth was able to significantly improve both cycle time and product quality. The additional topology optimization further increased the added value by reducing printing costs and improving the profitability of the overall investment.

40 % CYCLE TIME IMPROVEMENT (FROM 38 SECONDS TO 23 SECONDS)
60 % COOLING TIME REDUCTION (FROM 25 SECONDS TO 10 SECONDS)

In addition to redesigning the cooling circuit, topology optimization was used to reduce the overall mass of the mold. This process uses advanced computer modeling to remove unnecessary bulk material from the part and has been used to reduce overall AM printing time by 30%. Part weight has been reduced by 35% (2.3 kg to 1.5 kg).

Compared to conventional mold inserts, the
AM mold with the additional near-contour cooling after 15,000 shots (with topology optimization) or 29,000 shots (without topology optimization) cost-effective.

Application: Insert for medical container
» Reduction of the cycle time
performance compared to conventional cooling:
Cooling time: -15 %
Cycle time: -8 %
Application: use for household industry (iron handle).
» Reduction of the cycle time
» Prolonged life time
performance compared to conventional cooling:
Cycle time: -2,5 Sec.
Lifetime: + 40 % and still in use
