Duplex treatment = plasma nitriding + PVD coating system in one process

Duplex treatment is what we call the combination of a thermochemical plasma nitriding process with the subsequent deposition of an eifeler PVD layer in an uninterrupted plant process.

This results in a defined increase in the surface hardness of the tool material, which contributes significantly to improving the performance of the PVD coating.

Therefore, we developed a nitriding process suitable for this procedure and applied it to an Alpha 900 coating system, where it is upstream of the coating process.

In principle, all steel materials suitable for coating and nitriding are suitable for this process.

One application focus for which this approach is currently regularly and successfully chosen is tools for forming high-strength sheet materials. This is combined with the VARIANTIC or TiCN coating systems.

Combinations with other shift systems are also possible. Our application consultants will be happy to advise you on specific tasks.

This results in the following advantages for you:

  • Ideal build-up of a hardness gradient from the tough-hard tool core via a higher support hardness in the peripheral area to the extremely hard and wear-resistant tool surface.
  • This results in a considerably increased support effect for the extremely hard and strained ceramic wear protection layer.
  • The absorption capacity for pressure loads increases significantly!
