3D Printing / LPBF - Selective Laser Melting

LPBF requires high‑purity steel and alloy powders with controlled chemistry, particle size, and flowability. Key quality features include certified powder batches, traceability, stable process parameters, heat treatment, and inspection for consistent part quality.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), also referred to as Selective Laser Melting, is a precision additive manufacturing process for producing complex, high‑performance metal components. The quality and performance of LPBF parts are highly dependent on the characteristics of the metal powder used. Material requirements include tightly controlled chemical composition, high powder purity, low oxygen and moisture content, and consistent particle size distribution to ensure uniform spreading and stable laser interaction.

Steels and alloys commonly processed by LPBF include stainless steels, maraging steels, tool steels, low‑alloy steels, and nickel‑based alloys. Powders must exhibit high sphericity and good flowability to achieve dense, defect‑free layers and repeatable mechanical properties. Rapid melting and solidification demand materials with predictable thermal behavior to minimize cracking, residual stress, and undesired microstructural variations. Quality features include certified powder production, batch consistency, full traceability, and controlled reuse strategies. Process monitoring, validated parameter sets, post‑build heat treatment, and non‑destructive testing ensure dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and reliable performance comparable to conventionally manufactured components.
