High‑pressure die casting injects molten aluminum, magnesium, or zinc alloys into steel dies at high speed and pressure. Precision tooling and rapid solidification enable thin‑wall, high‑volume parts used in automotive, electronics, and structural components.
High‑pressure die casting is a fast, cyclic process in which molten metal is injected into a hardened steel die at high velocity and pressures reaching several thousand bar. Aluminum alloys such as Al‑Si or Al‑Mg are widely used due to their good castability and strength-to-weight ratio. The melt—typically aluminum, magnesium, or zinc alloys—is delivered to the shot chamber and accelerated by a hydraulic or servo-driven plunger. The gating system and intensification phase ensure rapid cavity filling and high compaction, enabling thin‑wall structures with excellent dimensional accuracy. HPDC tooling consists of fixed and moving die halves with optimized runner layouts, cooling circuits, ejector systems, and wear‑resistant inserts to withstand thermal fatigue and erosion. Common tooling materials are high quality 5%CrMoV-Hot Work Tool Steels. HPDC is essential for high-volume production of automotive structural components, housings, brackets, transmission parts, and consumer electronics, where tight tolerances, complex geometries, and high surface quality are required.
The BÖHLER W360 AMPO is the powder equivalent of the W360 ISOBLOC. Due to its chemical composition, the material belongs to the product group of hot-work tool steels. After hardening and tempering, it can achieve a hardness of up to 57 HRC with very good toughness properties. Its high temperature wear resistance, heat resistance and toughness characterizes the material. Applications: Printed components with conformal cooling for die casting applications, wear protection layers and repair work in mold making using laser cladding.
Read MoreBÖHLER W720 VMR is not a classic hot work tool steel, but an ultra-high strength maraging steel. Compared to quenched and tempered steels, the material generates its high strength not through a hardened and tempered martensitic structure with a high carbon content and secondary hardening carbides, but through the precipitation of intermetallic phases from a tough nickel martensitic matrix. BÖHLER W720 VMR corresponds to material number 1.6358 (X2NiCoMoTi18-9-5) and has proven to be ideally suited for many tool steel applications in cold and hot work (e.g., for extrusion stems) up to 450 °C.
Read MorePercipitation hardening nickel martensitic (marging) steel, material number 1.2709, which offers a good combination of strength and toughness. Can be printed very easily without additional heating of the building plattform or chamber. The achievable hardness of 55 HRC makes this material a universal solution for tool steel applications in which conformal cooling is required, such as die casting applications.

Read Morevoestalpine Chill Blocks are made from premium materials by BÖHLER/Uddeholm and developed to combine the highest venting performance with maximum process reliability. The patented wave design enables a gap size of up to 1.3 mm and therefore a significantly larger cross section for die evacuation compared to standard systems. As a result, venting-related defects such as gas porosity or short shots can be more reliably prevented. Furthermore, ejection forces are strongly reduced. This leads to an easy peel off and less bonding in the venting area. Through these design and performance advantages, a more reliable filling process, less fluctuation in casting quality and less maintenance effort can be achieved.
