2024-03-06 |

voestalpine Böhler Welding was celebrating a special anniversary at its Hamm site in 2023: the 150th anniversary of wire production.

The Hamm site always remained to its true core competence: wire production

Step into the heart of welding excellence at our cutting-edge production site in Hamm, Germany. With its wealth of experience in developing and producing welding consumables in particular the strong knowledge in wire production of high alloyed solid wires and TIG wires the site in Hamm proudly looks back to 150 years of innovation, welding expertise and pure dedication to The Perfect Weld Seam.

Nestled in the historic eastern Ruhr region, the Hamm site is not only the biggest German manufacturers of welding consumables, but also one of the largest employers in the region. Around 600 employees currently work here in more than 30 different professional fields.  Our facility has a workforce of over 600 employers, cementing our status as a cornerstone employer in the area.

The training of skilled labour is also of great importance to voestalpine Böhler Welding. Currently 16 trainees are completing their training here in Hamm. In addition to a modern environment and attractive framework conditions such as apprentice exchanges and stays abroad within the voestalpine Group, the professional development opportunities in a globally active company are also among the advantages offered at the Hamm site.

From Foundation to Global Excellence : The Story of Hamm unveiled

In 1873, the Ruhr region witnessed a pivotal moment: the birth of an industrial powerhouse fueled by steel and coal production. From the ashes of rapid urbanization emerged voestalpine Böhler Welding in Hamm, tracing its roots back to Berlin investors who seized opportunity amidst the industrial boom.

Over the decades, strategic mergers and acquisitions formed the company's history. In 1996, Böhler-Uddeholm and Thyssen joined forces, laying the groundwork for today's welding expertise. The acquisition by voestalpine in 2007 integrated the Böhler Welding Group, integrated fully in 2013. Today, the company’s current production includes solid wires and fluxes for submerged arc welding, with a particular emphasis on nickel-based and high alloyed welding consumables.

In 2023, we proudly celebrated 150 years of wire production at our esteemed Hamm location, marking a momentous milestone in our illustrious journey. We stride confidently into the future with boundless optimism. Our "Ambition 2025+" initiative should lead us to even greater success.

Hamm will be developing into a Competence Centre for Solid Wires and Fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding within voestalpine steel and technology group.

The site is now being expanded to become the "Competence Centre for Solid Wires and Fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding" within the voestalpine Böhler Welding Group and will therefore be responsible for further developments in these product groups within the globally active voestalpine Group in the future. An essential prerequisite for this was already created in 2019 with the opening of the application technology centre.

A special feature of the site: High-Tech Application Technology Center

Opened its doors in 2019, this cutting-edge facility offers customers unrivaled opportunities for test welds and training on the latest welding innovations. Equipped with state-of-the-art 3D printing machines suitable for components weighing up to 500 kg, Submerged arc welding machine and testing of different multi wire processes and collaborative robot applications together with large meeting rooms it represents the high-tech training centre for welding knowhow and competence.

Hamm is the central logistics hub of the voestalpine Böhler Welidng Group

Another key measure is the development of the site into the central logistics hub of the voestalpine Böhler Welding Group. In future, the Hamm site will be responsible for a large number of export and EU countries and products will be shipped from Hamm to their final destination, from the south of Europe, such as Spain, to the north, such as Sweden.

We are ready for the Future

Our focus now remains firmly on the future. As part of the voestalpine Böhler Welding Group, we want to become the leading provider of complete solutions in welding technology. It goes without saying that the customer and the result The Perfect Weld Seam are our top priority

Thorge Peters, Managing Director of the location company voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany, is pleased to say.
