MIM - Metal Injection Molding

MIM uses fine steel and alloy powders with controlled particle size, purity, and chemistry. Key quality features include certified feedstock, predictable sintering behavior, tight process control, and inspection to achieve dense, precise components.

Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) is a manufacturing technology for producing complex, high‑precision metal components in large series. The process combines fine metal powders with a polymer binder, followed by injection moulding, debinding, and sintering. Material requirements are critical, as powder characteristics directly influence mouldability, densification behavior, and final component properties. Powders must exhibit a very fine and narrow particle size distribution, high purity, controlled chemistry, and good homogeneity to ensure high sintered density and dimensional accuracy.

Steels and alloys commonly used in MIM include low‑alloy steels, stainless steels (austenitic, martensitic, and precipitation‑hardened grades), tool steels, and selected nickel‑based alloys. Powders must be optimized for high sinterability and predictable shrinkage during thermal processing. Quality features include certified powder batches with full traceability, controlled feedstock production, validated debinding and sintering cycles, and tight control of carbon and oxygen content. Extensive dimensional checks, density measurement, and metallurgical inspection ensure repeatable quality and mechanical performance comparable to conventionally manufactured parts.
