Jahn reveals what machines do. He connects them to the Internet, establishes their connectivity and data availability, and ensures process data are transparent for colleagues in the High Performance Metals Division (HPM). This results in valuable process improvements and commercial benefits.
Jahn studied electrical engineering at higher technical college (HTL) and since 2012 has gained valuable practical experience at voestalpine, combining work with his IT and business informatics studies. In 2017, he joined the team of experts for digitalization projects in the HPM Division, whose tasks included establishing the division’s Digitalization Competence Center. This milestone was honored with the voestalpine Digitalization Awards in 2018. Now he discusses how to use specific process data to improve work processes with his HPM colleagues in Asia in the mornings, in Europe during the day, and in America in the evening. He and his team have made this possible by developing and building a global, voestalpine corporate IoT platform to manage the process data from machines and facilities, which has been rolled out and introduced at ten voestalpine sites on three continents.
Since 2021, he has been responsible for the digital transformation in the HPM Division, working at Digital Solutions, an independent Group company, where he is continually focused on generating commercial and customer benefits: How can I make my processes even more transparent in order to drive the division forward? How can I use my digital products and services to create further areas of competence for the division?
He began his career at voestalpine because it was a local company, and because his grandfather and father had worked here. Now he enjoys working for the company due to its international focus in so many industries and sectors. He characterizes the work culture in the Group as team-focused, including on an international scale, with a willingness to help paired with open and respectful communication. No two days are the same. The IT/OT expert works with colleagues on the shop floor to make their work easier and improve processes.
How does he approach his job? Flexible, focused on solutions with the perseverance to achieve them, communicative, paired with strategic thinking, and a view to the commercial benefits. Advice based on his experience: Underpromise and overdeliver. What does that mean exactly? “Get stuck in and the rest will follow,” he says with a grin.
