More women in technology: Girls' Day 2025 inspires interest in STEM subjects

14 May 2025 |

Technology isn't just for men - this was once again impressively demonstrated at this year's Girls' Day 2025. Under the motto "Experience Technology", voestalpine Wire Technology opened its doors to schoolgirls for the third time and gave them the opportunity to experience industry up close - and perhaps discover their own future in the STEM field.

Insights into metal processing - hands-on instead of just theory

School girls from the 4th grade of the MS St. Kathrein visited voestalpine Wire Austria in Bruck an der Mur, where wire rod is produced for end customers using various processes (drawing, surface and heat treatment, etc.).

Girls' Day is a nationwide initiative in Austria that aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The goal is not only to arouse interest, but also to break down outdated gender stereotypes and open up new career perspectives.

Girls Day 2025 - Stem for women in tech

After a warm welcome by HR Manager Barbara Winkler and interesting presentations by Production Manager Jürgen Gasparin and Apprenticeship Coordinator Christian Saiger, the girls enjoyed a joint breakfast followed by an extensive tour of the factory. They saw first-hand how wire is used to make high-quality products for a wide range of applications - a fascinating process that left a lasting impression.

A special highlight was the creative hands-on session: using specially coated steel wire (jewelry wire), the girls formed different shapes using stencils. These were then mounted on a specially prepared wooden base with the voestalpine logo. It was clear that all participants enjoyed the experience!

At the end of the day, one of the girls told me that she was afraid the event would be boring - but her final verdict was quite the opposite: she said that Girls' Day was super exciting, informative and really fun. As an organizer, you couldn't ask for better feedback - thank you.

With this initiative, voestalpine Wire Technology is sending a strong message: Women are not only welcome in the industry - they actively help to shape it. With events like Girls' Day, the company wants to support young talent at an early stage and encourage them to find their way in a field that is still largely dominated by men.

At the end of the day, each participant received a goodie bag filled with information material and little surprises.

We hope to see some of the girls again - perhaps they will apply for an apprenticeship in the near future.
