Mohammad’s #FavoriteMoments on the Train: Our System is Safe!

Mohammad joined the company in 2017 as an IT service engineer in Customer Service. His team configures the IT components of hot-axle detection systems, either according to established standards or tailored to specific customer requirements. These systems monitor the temperature of train brakes and wheel bearings. The team also supports on-site commissioning and maintains the software. From the outset, Mohammad was particularly interested in how the Central Management Software (CMS) interacts with the system’s sensors. By collaborating closely with colleagues across departments, he quickly developed a comprehensive understanding of the entire system. In 2022, he took the next step in his career, becoming Technical Project Manager for CMS in Quality Assurance.

The Secret to Success: Perseverance and Teamwork

Mohammad recalls one particularly challenging project. During commissioning for a rail customer, the software performed flawlessly in the test environment, but an error repeatedly occurred in the customer’s IT environment. As the IT service engineer responsible, Mohammad was determined to identify the cause. Over the next seven months—made even more challenging by the COVID-19 pandemic—persistence and close, trust-based collaboration with the customer and internal specialists proved essential. The breakthrough finally came when Mohammad and two development colleagues spent three intensive hours analyzing the issue in a specially prepared test environment that replicated the customer’s system configuration. Their attention to detail and determination paid off: They identified and resolved the underlying error, the customer approved the solution, and the order was finalized—a true #FavoriteMoment. The system has now been operating reliably for several years.

Safety Makes Sense Everywhere

As a Technical Project Manager, Mohammad works with his colleagues to assess the scope and requirements of each new project. Together, they determine whether the solution can be implemented in full from the outset or whether a standardized version should be introduced first and customized in a second step. In either case, our systems monitor the temperature of train brakes and wheel bearings—using both standard functions and solutions tailored to the customer’s specific needs. Detecting overheating at an early stage is crucial, as it can lead to fires or derailments. Our systems help rail operators identify such risks before they become a serious safety hazard.

Our rail safety systems detect any overloading or uneven loading, which can then be corrected quickly to prevent derailments or damage to the rail systems.

#FavoriteMoments on the Train Ride to Sweden

Thanks to his work, Mohammad has become an experienced rail traveler. He also enjoys discovering new places and cultures in his free time. Japan, for example, is high on his travel wish list, while he regularly visits Sweden with his children to see his sister and enjoy the country’s sense of tranquility. During one train journey north, Mohammad noticed an unusual sound caused by a flat spot on a wheel. When he later checked the software, he saw that our Checkpoint system had correctly detected the defect and automatically triggered an alarm—a #FavoriteMoment that allowed him to experience the impact of his work firsthand.

At that moment, I realized that the software—whose configuration and updates I oversee—is working exactly as intended and is making an important contribution to rail safety.

Curiosity and Attention to Detail

Mohammad remains close to his parents and siblings, who live in Syria. Growing up there, he developed a passion for understanding how technical systems work—and for repairing them. One childhood experience illustrates his curiosity particularly well: While “cleaning up” the family car, he carefully explored every nook and cranny and discovered a small hidden button. When he pressed it, he inadvertently shut down the fuel pump, leaving the car unable to start. Only after a lengthy inspection did his father uncover the cause. Mohammad’s fascination with technical details has stayed with him to this day, and he still enjoys working on cars in his garage. At voestalpine, he puts the same precision, curiosity, and technical expertise to work, helping ensure that rail passengers reach their destinations safely.
