#FavoriteMoments: Commuting by train

Millions of people worldwide use trains as a fast and safe mode of transportation. They discover new destinations and enjoy eco-friendly mobility on the rails in their daily lives. A visit with four of our employees in Japan, Austria, Mexico, and Brazil offers insight into why they choose trains as their preferred mode of transportation for their daily commute to and from work—including #FavoriteMoments while riding the train!

Whether on the way to work or getting around town: rail infrastructure is an integral part of our daily lives. We make an important contribution to this worldwide—from high-quality rails and switch systems to innovative solutions for safe and durable rail networks. As a result, a piece of voestalpine is found in many train, tram, and metro networks.

Four employees from Japan, Austria, Mexico, and Brazil share why rail is indispensable to them in their daily lives and what #FavoriteMoments they experience along the way.

How long does it take to get to work?

Koji I.: I’ve been working at ASSAB Japan since 2004. My commute takes about an hour. I travel from Motoyawata Station to Yotsuya Station. The distance is about 18 km, and the actual train ride takes around 40 minutes.

What makes taking the train in Tokyo special?

Koji I.: Tokyo has a well-developed rail network. That’s why it’s common to commute by train from the suburbs to work in the city center. Commuter trains are punctual and safe, and they’re also faster and cheaper than other modes of transportation. However, the morning rush hour is intense: the trains are almost always packed. I stand for about 40 minutes, swaying along with the train. But that’s good for my endurance.

Your personal #FavoriteMoments on the train?

Koji I.: Unlike most people, who wear headphones and stare at their smartphones, I often read books on the train. In the morning, I look forward to eating soba noodles at the soba restaurant on the platform. After work, I can go out for a drink with colleagues and then take the train straight home.

How long does the commute to work take?

Wolfgang M.: Since I started at voestalpine in 2023, I’ve been commuting by train from Vienna to Linz four times a week. I get up at five, my train leaves at six, and I’m at the Linz plant before eight. I cover the distance from home to the train station in Vienna and from the train station in Linz to my workplace on a folding bike, which I take with me on the train.

What makes traveling by train in Austria so special?

Wolfgang M.: I travel on one of the most important—and therefore most reliable—routes in Austria. I can count on arriving right on time, and it’s also much cheaper than driving. Plus: Taking the train is good for the environment—and cycling is good for me!

Your personal #FavoriteMoments on the train?

Wolfgang M.: The train ride is always very pleasant. I don’t have to worry about a thing; I just hop on and ride with my own personal chauffeur, so to speak. On my way to work, I love listening to podcasts, like “Stories from History.” On the way home, I read books or magazines. I use this time as a break for myself between work and spending time with my family. I run into some passengers regularly, so we often strike up nice conversations.

How long does it take to get to work?

Andreek R.: I’ve been working at voestalpine since 2025 and commute by train five days a week. I take the S-Bahn line north of Mexico City, two stops (Cuautitlán–Lechería) on the way to work and two stops back on the way home. My total commute time is about an hour and a half. In addition to the commuter rail, I also take two buses.

What sets the rail network in Mexico City apart?

Andreek R.: I chose the train because it’s faster, it lets me avoid traffic, and it takes me directly and comfortably to my next destination after work—the gym. The train is significantly faster than other modes of transportation and helps me make my day more efficient.

Your personal #FavoriteMoments while riding the train?

Andreek R.: During the ride, I usually listen to music and read books. That helps me relax and make good use of my time.

How long does it take to get to work?

Sabrina S.: I’ve been commuting to work by train since 2024, which is when I started working at voestalpine. Four times a week, I take the train from my home to my workplace at voestalpine Böhler Welding Soldas do Brasil Ltda, where I work as an Import Assistant. The trip from my home to work takes about an hour. From the station closest to my home to the station near my workplace, we pass a total of five stops. I don’t have to transfer along the way, which is very convenient. The train ride takes about 20 minutes.

What makes the rail network in São Paulo stand out?

Sabrina S.: The route is a fast and safe connection with a low risk of unexpected incidents. What I particularly like about commuting by train is the speed and convenience with which you can get from one place to another. This saves me time and allows me to arrive at work relaxed and safe.

Your personal #FavoriteMoments while riding the train?

Sabrina S.: On the train, I usually sit or stand near the windows or doors because I enjoy watching the scenery.
