A Great Passion for Process Engineering

16 June 2021 |

"When I was in HTL, we talked about voestalpine almost every day. So it was only natural that Bernd Hammerer decided in the third grade to put his technical affinity and his skills in logical and analytical thinking to use in an apprenticeship as a process technician.

People take the time to explain things to me - for example, when analyzing faults or changing dimensions - I appreciate that very much. As a process engineer, you have to know your way around from A to Z.

He still sees this as his best decision, even if the beginning was not entirely easy and was marked by the age difference - "The other apprentices were 14, I was 19 when I started at the apprentice workshop". He is now in his third year of apprenticeship, emphasizes the advantages of the threefold approach training system and is happy about the good contact with his colleagues at voestalpine Wire Rod Austria in St. Peter Freienstein, where he is now expanding his skills within the company.

"People take the time to explain things to me - for example, when analyzing faults or changing dimensions - I appreciate that very much," says the dedicated apprentice, who is said to have commitment and a systematic way of working.

He sees his most important goal as completing his apprenticeship, after which he would like to stay with voestalpine. He can imagine many further training measures, but for the time being, the successful LAP certificate is still the focus of his attention.

I've known Bernd since his 2nd year of apprenticeship: he's reliable, versatile, and he adapts quickly to changing situations. With Bernd, you notice the will to take the initiative; he wants to learn everything and get ahead. And I'm happy to pass on my knowledge.

Great Passion follows Great Commitment

Senior firefighter. Commitment is not only a maxim for Bernd Hammerer in his professional life, he also "lives" it in his private life: To "stay in shape", he takes part in a voluntary firefighting exercise once a week, and after eight years as a member of the fire department, during which he has also had to go out in respiratory protective equipment, he is being promoted "senior firefighter" this year.
