An integrated value chain in practice: Collaboration with Italfil on the first 6,000 tons

22 June 2026 |

“One group. One value chain. One solution.” – this motto reflects how collaboration between voestalpine Wire Rod Austria GmbH, voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany GmbH, and ITALFIL S.p.A. Welding Wires works today. What began as a partnership has evolved into a closely aligned collaboration across the process chain following the integration of Italfil, a premium manufacturer of welding wires, into the voestalpine Group – currently handling a supply volume of around 6,000 tons of wire rod.

A strategic move with impact

With the acquisition of a majority stake in Italfil, the voestalpine Group has further strengthened its expertise in welding technology. Today, this integration spans the entire process chain — from the raw material base at Erzberg, through steel production in Donawitz and wire rod production, to the finished welding wire.  The respective strengths complement each other well: Italfil brings experience, flexibility, and local market knowledge, while voestalpine Wire Rod Austria and voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany contribute international reach, modern facilities, and a global presence.

For customers, this means above all: better-matched materials, stable processes, and a holistic view of material and application — supported by a continuous expansion of the product portfolio.

The strength of the collaboration lies in the combination of local expertise and a global perspective — Italfil brings flexibility and market proximity, while voestalpine Wire Rod Austria and voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany contribute international experience and technological infrastructure.

What sets the collaboration apart

The focus lies on the close coordination between material development and further processing, with expertise being effectively combined.

From the very beginning, the collaboration has been characterized by an open, solution-oriented exchange. This has enabled the targeted development of wire rod grades that are perfectly aligned with the specific requirements of the drawing processes.

Our partnership with Italfil demonstrates how we create real added value by working seamlessly from material design to application.

While some loose collaboration was already in place before the acquisition following its integration into the voestalpine Group, the collaboration has intensified significantly, with technical exchanges and joint developments now taking place faster and with greater focus and tangible results.

This enables stable excellent product quality across the 6,000 tons of wire rod supplied by voestalpine Wire Rod Austria so far. Looking ahead, we expect to grow these volumes to 15,000 tons for the current fiscal year.

With this close alignment, projects benefit from shorter development cycles and a clear focus on practical requirements. Beyond technical aspects, collaboration across sites also plays a key role, driven by trust, mutual support, and a shared commitment to finding solutions.

Key success factors

Collaboration with Italfil

Success is driven by several interrelated factors:

  • direct exchange between subject matter experts across all production stages
  • transparent communication and rapid feedback loops
  • a shared understanding as “one group”
  • a consistent focus on quality and continuous improvement

Another key success factor is the combination of complementary strengths: Italfil’s flexibility and process-oriented approach with voestalpine Wire Rod Austria’s and voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany structured, international setup.

Access to advanced resources and technologies further strengthens the innovative power of processes and products.

Marian Gutsche

The strong cultural fit - Italfil’s openness to innovation and voestalpine Wire Rod Austria’s and voestalpine Böhler Welding Germany’s practical, hands-on mindset - has made it possible to quickly develop wire grades that are precisely tailored to our processes. At the same time, we’ve achieved rapid iterations and continuous improvements with minimal complexity.

Challenges as part of the process

As with any close technical collaboration, there were challenges here as well, particularly in coordinating material specifications, integrating processes, and collaborating across locations.

These are being addressed through a structured approach, including continuous exchange, joint testing, clear communication, and the active involvement of employees throughout the change process.

This iterative approach not only led to robust technical solutions but also strengthened the collaboration in the long term.

Concrete benefits for customers

The collaboration has a direct impact on quality and efficiency across the entire process chain — even at delivery volumes of so far 6,000 tons of wire rod.

In practical terms, this results in reliable processing, reduced fluctuations, and consistently high reproducibility. At the same time, closer coordination improves material performance and increases product reliability.

For customers, this means consistently high quality, an expanded portfolio of tailored material solutions, and reduced process risks in downstream processing.

In addition, there are further benefits:

  • Access to new technologies and customized solutions
  • Shorter development times and faster implementation of innovations
  • Improved efficiency through optimized production processes
  • New market opportunities through an international presence
  • Continuous competence development through knowledge sharing

In practice, this translates into stable processes and materials that are precisely tailored to the application.

Conclusion: A model for integrated value creation

The collaboration between voestalpine Wire Rod Austria and Italfil demonstrates how integrated material and process development works in practice. The close alignment of expertise results in solutions that are both technically and economically convincing.

The added value stems from consistent coordination across the entire process chain:

  • faster implementation
  • stable processes
  • tailored materials

Or, to put it simply: “One group. One value chain. One solution.”

This project exemplifies voestalpine Wire Rod Austria’s and voestalpine Böhler Welding Germanycommitment to developing integrated solutions through close collaboration - connecting every step from raw material to application.
