Shutdown period 2026 successfully completed

22 September 2026 |

The 2026 plant shutdown and the associated maintenance turnaround demonstrated what can be achieved when production, maintenance, the project department, and external partners work closely together. The activities, focused on ensuring long-term plant reliability and operational excellence, were complex, diverse, and essential for maintaining a dependable production process. Read more!

A successful revision begins long before the production is shut down. Through close coordination, the workflows for each construction site were prepared in detail in collaboration with production, maintenance, and the project department. A key success factor was ensuring the timely availability of all major components, combined with careful workforce and resource planning. With numerous contractors and teams working simultaneously, it was essential that every process and interface aligned seamlessly from day one.

Thorough preparation and cross-functional planning across all interfaces are half the battle won.

Push bench in the seamless tube rolling mill: precision work across 51 meters

Following the recent replacement of the rack, the rack guideway had to be refurbished during a plant shutdown. Over the course of two weeks, and partly operating in a two-shift system, approximately 134 rails were manually dismantled and replaced. In total, around 14 tonnes of material had to be handled by hand. The final alignment was then carried out over a distance of 51 meters, achieving an impressive accuracy of just 0.5 millimeters.

Crane rails: Logistics in a highly confined space

Replacing approximately 343 running meters of crane rails in the seamless tube rolling mill presented the project team with unique logistical challenges. Crane operations were restricted during the shutdown period, while adjacent construction sites required close coordination. Precise planning and continuous alignment between all involved parties were therefore essential to ensure a smooth, efficient, and safe execution of the project.

We are proud of everyone involved that, despite the significant time pressure, everything ran more or less smoothly and without major issues. Our olleagues know that we can only be successful as a team. Success is something we achieve together.

    Additional revision activities

    • The straightening machine underwent a major upgrade, including the replacement of 14 motors as well as modifications to the hydraulic system, cabling, and protection and control equipment. In addition, proximity switches were converted to laser light barriers, and components of the layer saw and cross-transfer system were renewed.

    • The rack guide strips on the push bench were refurbished as part of the turnaround activities. At the hot straightening machine, the hydraulic supply for the plungers and the roll lubrication system were optimized. As a result, future roll changes will require the disconnection and reconnection of only 12 lines instead of 30, significantly reducing maintenance effort and downtime.

      Successful together

The 2026 revision centered on a standard maintenance shutdown that was essential from an economic and operational perspective. The strong commitment, flexibility, and sense of responsibility demonstrated by everyone involved were key to its successful execution.

We can only succeed as a team. Each of us knows a little, and together we know almost everything. After all, it is impossible to know or plan for everything. That is why collaboration, trust, and mutual support are so important to our success.

voestalpine Tubulars looks back with pride on what has been achieved and is once again well prepared for the challenges ahead. The 2026 shutdown has once again demonstrated just how important teamwork, commitment, and dedication are in overcoming complex challenges and ensuring long-term success.

A sincere thank you to everyone involved!

And as the saying goes: after the shutdown is before the shutdown. Planning for the next revision has already begun.
