We have significantly improved our environmental footprint through targeted measures to increase energy efficiency and save resources. Modern technologies and advanced energy management systems are our tools in this context.
The most important savings measures are summarised below. In addition to the mentioned measures to increase efficiency and save energy, further innovative and sustainable projects are being implemented.
By reducing the oven-related consumption of natural gas in production and by extracting the waste heat from the rotary hearth furnace, considerable savings in CO2 emissions have been achieved in recent years.
Thanks to various efficiency-enhancing measures implemented in the areas of lighting, compressed air, pumps and extraction systems, electricity consumption has been significantly reduced. Today, 100% of the electricity used comes from renewable energy sources.
By reducing the consumption of input materials and specifically training employees to reuse work materials, the amount of waste has been reduced.
The results of these years of research work include the recently introduced Renewables product portfolio and the dope-free thread coating for premium connections (DryTec®).
Renewables play a crucial role in sustainable energy supply, especially in the field of geothermal energy and hydrogen technology. These renewable resources offer an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional energy sources by helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

greentec steel our ambitious plan for green steel production: in the first step of this phased approach, one electric arc furnace (EAF) powered by green electricity will be built at each of the sites in Linz and Donawitz aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 %.
Starting in 2027, the two electric arc furnaces will enable voestalpine to produce around 2.5 million tons of CO2-reduced steel annually: 1.6 million tons in Linz, and 850,000 tons in Donawitz. As of 2030 to 2035, we plan to replace another blast furnace at each of the sites in Linz and Donawitz.
To achieve the goal of steel production with net zero CO2-emissions by 2050, we are actively researching into several new processes and investing in pilot projects that demonstrate new ways to produce steel. Another, particularly important, prerequisite for decarbonizing steel production is the availability of sufficient quantities of renewable energy at commercially realistic prices. This is the only way which tomorrow’s technologies can be applied in a truly competitive manner.
For us, sustainability means using resources responsibly and developing long-term solutions that protect the environment and are economically viable. Among other things, we rely on renewable energies, implement measures to save CO2 and electricity, pay attention to the well-being of our employees and continuously work on the implementation of further innovative and sustainable projects. These measures help us to minimise our environmental impact and leave a world worth living in for future generations.
The voestalpine greentec steel project gives us the opportunity to further reduce our CO2 footprint. At our site, we consistently focus on measures to save energy and optimise our production processes. In close cooperation with many partners, we are also driving forward the implementation of pioneering hydrogen projects.
We are involved in several pilot projects, including a hydrogen cavern project in the Netherlands, which has already been successfully realised. In this project, 100% hydrogen was discharged with our products under pressure using tubing. Our R&D team is in constant dialogue with experts from the hydrogen sector and is endeavouring to drive economic efficiency forward.
Geothermal energy captures and harnesses the natural heat within the earth for electrical power and power heating systems. This sustainable approach helps to generate clean energy without having a harmful impact on the environment. By supporting geothermal projects, countries can diversify their energy sources while minimising their carbon footprint.
Geothermal energy requires pipes and grades similar to those used for gas and oil production. Also, the drilling scheme is comparable, whereby voestalpine Tubulars can contribute its long-term know-how in this segment and has the competence to develop further technologies.
