Pipes for the Semmering Base Tunnel

2 May 2023 |

One of the most important infrastructure projects in the heart of Europe. We, voestalpine Tubulars, are supplying the project with tubes for tunnel construction.

The Semmering Base Tunnel is a sustainable investment in the future of rail transport. As part of the new southern route, it strengthens the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor in Europe.

As a result, our economy remains internationally competitive and the environment breathes a sigh of relief: Every ton of freight transported by rail causes around 30 times fewer CO2 emissions than a truck transport.

The construction of the tunnel is a benefit for the region

Building the Semmering Base Tunnel strengthens companies in the region and stimulates the labor market. All in all, 1,200 people are employed on the construction sites alone.

During the operating phase, 11,000 permanent jobs will be created, most of them in the region and in Austria. The domestic economy is also strengthened: Every euro invested in the tunnel results in five euros of growth.

We are very pleased that, in addition to global supplies in the energy sector, we also produce quality products for regional infrastructure projects.

A deep insight into tunnel construction

Our team on site, consisting of Kurt Niederberger (Director Sales), Alexandra Zelisko (Director Public Relations & Corporate Development) and Holger Raspotnig (Manager Industrial Pipes), was able to experience the tunneling process first hand.

They were able to examine our products in use and got a very good overview of the entire tunnel project.

We, voestalpine Tubulars, supply the project with tubes for tunnel construction.
More precisely, it is our mechanical tubes.

Holger Raspotnig, Manager Industrial Pipes

For this project, it was particularly important to produce the products just-in-time and to respond flexibly to special deadlines. These are pipes for the highest mechanical stress, which are used as part of injection drilling in this tunnel construction project.

Holger Raspotnig, Manager Industrial Pipes

Through joint product developments with customers, voestalpine Tubulars continues to set new standards. To name just a few areas of application: Mechanical tubes are used as construction and fastening tubes (tunnel anchors), as tubes for mechanical engineering and for slope stabilization.

Product features of our mechanical tubes

  • Various carbon and low-alloy chromium-molybdenum steel grades according to EN 10297-1
  • Hot rolled/ heat treated/ thermo-mechanically treated
  • Outside diameters from 1 to 7 5/8 inches (26.9 to 193.7 mm) / Wall thicknesses from 0.200 to 1.150 inches (5 to 28mm)
