greentec steel

With our research activities, technologies and innovations related to greentec steel, we are making a significant long-term contribution to achieving the climate goals. In a first step towards green steel production, we are planning to reduce our CO2 emissions by up to 30% by 2029 – that is almost 5% of Austria’s annual CO2 emissions. greentec steel is thus the largest climate protection program in Austria.

HBI plant marks another milestone
Starting in 2027, hot briquetted iron (HBI) will be one of the primary feedstocks for our electric arc furnace in Linz. To ensure continuous feeding, a dedicated supply facility is being built at the Linz site.

We’re digging tunnels for greentec steel
The microtunnel supplying power to the new electric arc furnace at the Linz site has been completed. This brings us one step closer to our goal—even underground—of transforming steel production as part of greentec steel.

greentec steel via pneumatic tube
A kilometer-long pneumatic tube system has been supporting us at our Linz site for more than three decades. It connects the production facilities of our greentec steel Edition with the central testing laboratory. This is how we ensure the quality of our most sustainable steel edition.
