The Science Based Targets initiative is the basis for our ambitious targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions

As the voestalpine Group, we committed to setting specific targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2022. Our proposed targets have now been reviewed and validated by the SBTi: our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets are in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (“well-below 2°C trajectory”).

In addition to direct greenhouse gas emissions from production (Scope 1), we have also set ambitious targets for the reduction of Scope 2 (energy purchases), and Scope 3 (e.g. raw materials, transport) emissions. Specifically, we are committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2029 (compared to the reference year 2019), and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2029 (compared to the reference year 2019).

SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration involving the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). It supports companies in aligning their business activities with the Paris Agreement climate targets, providing science-based evidence of their progress.
Around the world, more than 7,750 companies from a wide variety of sectors, including the steel industry, are now involved in SBTi. Nearly 5,000 of these companies have already set targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Our focus on sustainability

Within the framework of our focus greentec steel, we provide an overview of our concrete steps on the way towards long-term CO2-neutral steel production and the innovative processes we are using on this way. We provide information about the challenges we face and the breakthrough technologies we are already researching today in order to achieve our goal of CO2-neutral steel production by 2050.
