voestalpine Stahlwelt: Where Innovation, Technology, and Steel Come to Life
- 2
Since its opening in 2009, our voestalpine Stahlwelt has established itself as a popular destination for school groups, college students, families, industry professionals, and technology enthusiasts. Approximately 750,000 people have already visited the voestalpine Stahlwelt. With this comprehensive modernization, we are creating a future-oriented exhibition for all generations—featuring state-of-the-art exhibition technology, digital applications, and a completely new architectural concept.
The exhibition not only provides interesting facts about steel as a material, its production, and further processing. Above all, it demonstrates how our products and technologies shape everyday life in so many ways—from the automotive and aerospace industries to rail infrastructure systems, and on to energy and medical technology.
Many visitors will recognize familiar applications of our products—such as in vehicles, railroad switches, or aerospace components. Other exhibits may seem surprising at first glance: an astronaut’s helmet, a surfboard, a luge, or even a piggy bank demonstrate just how diversely our technologies and materials are used in a wide variety of areas of life. This opens up new perspectives on our products and highlights just how prevalent they are in everyday life and in future technologies.
The central element of the voestalpine Stahlwelt is the so-called Grid—a suspended, walk-through steel structure that forms the spatial and thematic backbone of the exhibition. The Grid connects content, exhibits, and visitors, highlighting what sets us apart: technological excellence, innovative strength, and our transformation toward steel production with net-zero CO₂ emissions.
A total of approximately 138 metric tons of steel was used, of which about 40 metric tons was the CO₂-reduced greentec steel Edition. Around 8,500 individually controllable LED light points create a unique lighting display and make the Grid an architectural highlight of the exhibition.
Our products and the expertise of our employees were put to use in this project: The structure was built at our site in Krems, and the steel used came from our site in Linz. The individual Grid elements were prefabricated in Krems as “trees” up to 13 meters tall, transported to Linz, and installed with millimeter precision at the voestalpine Stahlwelt – a logistical and structural challenge.
Across five newly designed levels, we invite visitors to discover our company, our global presence, and our products and technologies. In addition to insights into steel production and processing, the focus is on future-oriented topics and innovations.
A special focus is on greentec steel, our phased plan for transforming steel production. The exhibition vividly illustrates the technological developments needed to pave the way toward more sustainable steel production.
