Sustainable: Solar power for machines, shelves, rails and all kinds of vehicles
- 5
We have been shaping steel solutions in Krems for over 80 years. Today, Krems is an important location for us and the headquarters of the Metal Forming Division. The tube and profile solution specialist voestalpine Krems, the division holding company voestalpine Metal Forming and the high-bay racking expert voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik are all based here. Nestled in the heart of Lower Austria’s wine-growing region, cold-formed, high-precision steel tubes and profiles are produced for a wide range of industries in the fields of mobility, energy, material handling, construction and mechanical engineering, as well as wine and fruit growing. The Krems site manufactures, for example, substructures for photovoltaic and solar systems, which are used there to generate electricity.

The largest solar power plant at our Austrian sites – specifically the one in Krems – is helping us to achieve the Group’s goal of net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 as planned. The photovoltaic system covers an area of more than 39,000 square metres on the northern part of the company’s premises. This means that around 33% of the electrical energy requirements of our Krems site can be covered by solar energy with an output of 8,045 kWp.
voestalpine Böhler Profil and voestalpine Precision Strip have been using the Ybbs as an energy source for more than 100 years, and the local hydroelectric power plants continuously supply green energy for our production processes. With powerful photovoltaic systems on the roofs of its sites in Kematen and Böhlerwerk—covering a total area of 15,000 m²—Precision Strip can produce an additional 2,800 MWh/a of solar power itself, thereby reducing its electricity purchases, which, incidentally, are exclusively green electricity. By using water and solar power, its share of self-generated energy rises to a total of up to 40% of its total electrical energy requirements. Incidentally, this photovoltaic system at the Kematen site is also exciting from an installation point of view, as we demonstrate how a solar power system can be installed even on a round, foil-covered hall roof. This is made possible by the iFIX system manufactured by voestalpine Automotive Components Schwäbisch Gmünd.
The foundry site in Traisen completes a beautiful cycle: the solar power generated on the factory roof is used to perfectly cast impellers for Kaplan turbines, which then generate clean electricity in hydroelectric power plants.
From a societal perspective, we are in the midst of a major energy transition. Heating systems are gradually being converted from natural gas to heat pumps. In terms of mobility, electric drives are set to overtake fuel drives in the long term, and heat treatments will be induced by electricity rather than natural gas in the future. Numerous possibilities can be found under the search term “fuel switch”. Investments in phasing out fossil fuels and expanding renewable energies are increasing, and the energy transition therefore requires more electrical energy, i.e. electricity.
The load on the electricity grids is therefore increasing, and the construction of solar power systems is not only economical and makes sense for the site’s own supply, but also generally cushions the load on the electricity grid.
Incidentally, we handle our activities relating to the purchase of green electricity in our North and South energy procurement pools. The “South Pool” bundles the electricity requirements of the two major consumers Kapfenberg and Donawitz, with a total of 12 locations in Lower Austria and Styria, in order to achieve the best possible negotiating position on the market and thus optimal conditions for the purchase of 100% green electricity. The North Pool bundles the requirements of the numerous Upper Austrian companies in Linz and Steyrling.
