Hydropower for wire manufacturers – voestalpine Wire Austria increases energy efficiency and security of supply

23 March 2026 |

voestalpine Wire Austria GmbH has successfully completed the logistically challenging revitalization of all its weir systems. This is not an eco-luxury, but rather a significant contribution to the long-term economic efficiency and security of supply at the site.

Sustainable construction project in the heart of Bruck an der Mur

Located in the heart of Bruck an der Mur, surrounded by the Mur and Mürz rivers and the train station with its busy access roads, voestalpine Wire Austria produces wire for future-oriented industries worldwide.

At the end of last year, the revitalized "Andrieu" weir, which had previously been partially washed away, was successfully put back into operation. Under the direction of project manager Manuel Jandl and accompanied by experienced experts, the damming of the Mürz was completed even before the originally planned end of the project in spring 2026.

Project goals – successfully implemented

  • Sustainable and stable energy supply
  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Improvement of flood protection for fail-safe operation
  • Protection of the ecological habitat of the Mürz

For customers, this means greater production reliability, lower risk of failure, and sustainable supply chains.

Energy management for the next 100 years

In-house electricity generation from hydroelectric and photovoltaic systems already covers up to 50% of the site's electricity requirements. At the same time, systematic efforts are being made to optimize existing systems, gradually substitute forms of energy, and consistently remove unnecessary consumption from the grid through comprehensive energy monitoring systems and accompanying studies - for even greater energy efficiency and lower energy consumption.

Heat pumps and additional waste heat recovery systems are also used to recover thermal energy and make it usable again.

Reicher Martin

We now have the lowest energy consumption in the last twelve years.

Martin Reicher, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Bruck an der Mur and St. Peter/Freienstein site

The focus remains on the use of hydropower: COO Martin Reicher and Project Manager Manuel Jandl are delighted with the successful implementation of the highly complex construction logistics and safety-critical revitalization of all weir systems.

A showcase project for energy efficiency

With a high proportion of self-generated electricity and consistent energy savings, voestalpine Wire Austria GmbH at the Bruck an der Mur site is developing into another impressive "energy example."

A glance at the project documentation reveals the enormous effort involved - a technically and organizationally highly complex project has been successfully completed.

Congratulations to everyone involved!
