Green energy supply at voestalpine Wire Technology: A key building block for sustainability and climate protection

17 July 2025 |

"Renewables" is the magic word for CO₂-free energy generation and active climate protection: electricity from inexhaustible sources such as sun, water and wind forms the foundation for a climate-friendly industrial future.

Active expansion of in-house generation from renewable sources

At voestalpine Wire Technology, we are already consistently focusing on green energy.

Our goal is to supply all production sites worldwide - including the wire rolling mill and international drawing shops - with 100% renewable electricity in the future. voestalpine Wire Technology is therefore making targeted investments in photovoltaics, hydropower and wind energy.

🌞 Photovoltaics: projects on roofs and open spaces:

💨 Wind power: Participation in wind farms in Styria (AT)

🌊 Hydropower: Two own hydropower plants on the Muerz (1.8 MW) at the Bruck an der Mur site voestalpine Wire Austria (AT)

Energy efficiency: doing more with less

In parallel with the expansion of renewable energies, voestalpine Wire Technology is focusing on comprehensive energy-saving measures:

  • LED conversion, modern motors, compressed air leakage elimination
  • Heat pumps with waste heat recovery
  • Energy scout training, heating and process optimization
  • Quality improvement to reduce rejects
  • Highly energy-efficient new plants

Roadmap to climate neutrality

voestalpine Wire Technology is pursuing ambitious climate targets with the Group-wide greentec steel initiative and its own Roadmap2Zero:

  • 35% CO₂ reduction in wire production by 2030
  • Net zero emissions (Scope 1 & 2) by 2040
  • 100% green electricity for all sites
  • Scope 3: net zero emissions by 2050
  • Investments in new technologies such as heat pumps, EAF steel production and hydrogen projects

The planned shutdown of blast furnaces by 2030 will make renewable energies even more central: Cogeneration gas will be eliminated, while electricity from photovoltaics. Wind, water and hydrogen are gaining in importance.

Sustainability along the supply chain

voestalpine Wire Technology pursues a holistic sustainability strategy that also includes suppliers. This strategy includes material efficiency, reduction of waste, optimized production processes as well as long-term partnerships and standards along the supply chain:

  • Scope 3 monitoring
  • Supplier audits and ecological standards
  • Certifications such as EcoVadis Gold, ISO 14001/50001
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for greater product transparency

Conclusion: Performance in Sustainability

Solar and wind energy at voestalpine Wire Technology

We do not see sustainability as a trend, but as a corporate responsibility. The combination of our own green energy production, energy efficiency measures and a clear decarbonization strategy makes voestalpine Wire Technology a sustainable partner in the industry. Our vision: green wire production - low CO₂, innovative and responsible.
