Green Electricity Fuels Our Sustainable Journey!

26 March 2024 |

The voestalpine Rotec Group, as part of the Metal Forming Division, has set itself the goal of establishing climate-neutral production by 2035 through our ambitious "CO2untdown to zero" initiative. Every site within our Group is actively contributing to this goal, meticulously outlining measures in individual CO2 roadmaps to curtail local emissions.

Green electricity stands tall as a cornerstone in our journey to zero CO2. We are building on 3 pillars to ensure the long-term supply of green electricity: Generating green electricity ourselves, long-term green contracts and purchasing green electricity on the market.

At our largest site within the voestalpine Rotec Group, in Krieglach (Austria), we have recently achieved significant milestones.

Solar power - we produce sustainable energy on our own

In recent months, around 3,800 photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roofs of the production halls at our Austrian site, covering an impressive area of around 10,000 m². With an installed capacity of 1.6 MWp, the system will cover approximately 14% of our local electricity requirements in future.

We are proud to be making our contribution to a more sustainable future by investing in renewable energy and at the same time ensuring a long-term green energy supply for our site.

Securing regional wind energy in the long term

Our second pillar for securing the supply of green energy is a long-term contract that guarantees the purchase of energy from two Styrian wind farms until 2034. Since April 2023, we have been sourcing electricity from the Stanglalm wind farm and will soon also be sourcing from the Hochpürschtling wind farm. Both wind farms generate electricity exclusively for 12 voestalpine companies. In the future, approx. 10-12% of voestalpine Rotec GmbH's electricity requirements will be covered by local wind energy.

Purchase of green electricity on the market

In addition to in-house production and the long-term contract, the remaining electricity at the Krieglach site is also covered exclusively by green energy. The green energy (and the corresponding Renewable Energy Certificates) is purchased on the market, thus ensuring a climate-neutral power supply for the entire site.

Green electricity in the voestalpine Rotec Group

The installation of photovoltaic systems and the purchase of 100% of the electricity required from renewable sources are also currently being examined at our other voestalpine Rotec Group sites. At our British site at voestalpine Rotec Ltd, in Hinckley, we are already a significant step ahead: since 2016, over 25% of local electricity has been sourced from a locally installed PV system, and the remaining electricity requirements have also been covered exclusively from renewable resources in recent years.

In the local CO2 roadmaps of our voestalpine Rotec sites, numerous additional measures are included to ensure climate-neutral production by 2035. With clear goals and comprehensive plans, our sails are set for a sustainable future.
