voestalpine Railway Systems receives its largest single order in history, worth EUR 470 million, for the new high-speed Rail Baltica line

2026-06-18 |

Rail Baltica is one of the most important high-speed rail infrastructure projects in Europe and will create a high-performance north-south connection between Northern and Central Europe. voestalpine Railway Systems has received its largest single order to date, worth approximately 470 million euros, for the supply of high-tech turnouts and digital monitoring systems. This further strengthens voestalpine’s position as a leading global provider of system solutions for railway infrastructure.

The framework agreements provide for the delivery of up to 1,000 high-speed and standard-speed turnouts, including fully digital monitoring technology, for the fully electrified rail line. Production will take place at voestalpine's sites in Lithuania and Latvia, with the first products (prototypes) being delivered in 2027.

As the world market leader for complete railway infrastructure systems, we are particularly pleased to be able to make an important contribution to the European flagship project Rail Baltica with our deliveries.

Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO voestalpine AG

voestalpine Railway Systems' high-speed turnouts are designed for speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. These intelligent turnouts, equipped with diagnostic instruments – essentially the turnout's "on-board computer" – simplify maintenance and thus prevent failures.

We can offer our customers a comprehensive product portfolio – from planning and design of track and turnout systems to monitoring of the finished railway line.

Franz Kainersdorfer, Board Member of voestalpine AG and Head of the Metal Engineering Division

A single high-speed turnout can be equipped with around 40 sensors that collect a variety of data, from information about weather conditions to the turnout's wear and tear. This data is transmitted to the analysis software in real time, enabling necessary measures to be initiated early.

As the global market leader for complete railway infrastructure systems, voestalpine Railway Systems is also a leading provider of standardized signaling technology (EULYNX). Its monitoring systems are already in use worldwide by almost all major mixed-traffic railway companies, as well as by major freight railways in North America and mining railways in Australia and South America. Further projects have been implemented in South Korea, Mexico, Germany, Spain, and the USA, among other countries.

Rail Baltica: A European infrastructure project of economic and historical importance

Rail Baltica makes a significant contribution to connecting the Baltic states to the trans-European rail network. This cross-border new-build project encompasses the five EU member states of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as well as indirectly Finland, and creates a high-capacity north-south connection between Helsinki and Warsaw.

The project also has an important historical significance: Rail Baltica reconnects Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the European standard-gauge network for the first time since World War II, thus fully integrating them into the EU rail system.
