“smarten up” your cams! Camtec at the VDI symposium 2023.

From 14th to 16th March 2023 the 12th VDI Conference for Innovative Sheet Metal Forming in the Automotive Industry took place in Nürtingen near Stuttgart. At the conference, industry experts discussed current topics such as the transformation in the automotive industry, sheet metal forming for e-mobility, development trends in steel and aluminum materials for car body parts and digitalization in toolmaking.

Bernhard Lackner (Engineering / R&D) from voestalpine Camtec was also present and refers about the sensor integration of cam units. He used the voestalpine Camtec e-cam as an example, to show how cam unit operations can be monitored and what possibilities and potentials arise from the acquisition and evaluation of measurement data.

The e-cam makes cam units more intelligent in terms of quality assurance, process reliability and economic efficiency. For toolmaking, this means:

  • Process monitoring with warning signals
  • Prevention of consequential damage in the tool
  • Optimized service and replacement cycles through predictive maintenance

The e-cam uses integrated sensors to monitor the position, load and whether the positive return is active. Position sensoring via inductive proximity switches is already available as an add-on option for the O-KS and O-BS category cam units (e-cam 1.0).

More detailed information on the following expansion stage of the monitoring (e-cam 2.0) can be obtained from the following link: www.voestalpine.com/camtec/en/Cam-units/e-cam
