#FavoriteMoments from the lab: Christian conducts research into green steel

Christian joined our research team in September 2021 and works in materials development for hot-rolled steel products at our Linz site. His interdisciplinary team focuses on the digital modeling of manufacturing processes and material properties. It is precisely these that we want to understand, control, and predict even better through our research teams. Christian’s task is to obtain reliable data for these models through experiments. In this way, he is helping to master the transformation of metallurgy to electric arc furnaces—for the production of green steel—and to make this available to our customers—for automotive and household appliance components, goods for the energy industry, furniture, shelving systems, tools, and much more.

We want to understand which temperatures or process steps are associated with which materials properties . This allows us to keep the properties of the products within an even narrower window.

Scientifically planning and evaluating laboratory tests

Christian plans and supervises experiments, including many laboratory melts, in which various process steps are simulated or materials are tested. High-precision laboratory equipment is available for the experimental work, which the respective plant technicians know inside out. A new device has been in use for two years, which can be used to test various loads at elevated temperatures . Christian researches methods and procedures in scientific sources to determine the specific characteristics of various materials and plans the experiment with his colleagues in the laboratory. He collects and evaluates the results of the experiment: only the useful ones are included in the process model. Delivering added value and work that pays off – that’s what makes Christian happy. Those are his highlights!

#FavoriteMoments are when you come up with a new experiment and end up with usable data. When values that were previously inaccessible can be made accessible – that's really great!

Happy to share knowledge

After completing his HTL education with a focus on mechanical engineering, Christian transferred to Graz University of Technology and discovered his fascination for materials as part of his mechanical engineering studies. As part of his doctoral thesis, he has already collaborated with us on the topic of “Ductility behavior of microalloyed steels during continuous casting.” Today, he shares his knowledge with current doctoral students and is in close scientific exchange with colleagues at Graz University of Technology, the MCL (Materials Center Leoben), and the Montanuniversität Leoben.

Christians #FavoriteMoments

He wouldn’t describe himself as a secret revealer – but his healthy curiosity drives him forward. Trying new things, even if not every experiment yields usable results, is part of his everyday research routine. His strength lies in his calm and structured approach to work. This allows him to maintain an overview of complex data sets. Christian values honest and respectful interaction with others, which he experiences daily in his team and in conversations with interface partners. In addition to important family #FavoriteMoments, he also talks enthusiastically about cycling. His evening ride takes him around the Pfenningberg near Linz for an hour and a half to two hours. And on weekends, he likes to plan longer tours.

About the campaign

In our new brand and image campaign #FavoriteMoments, we show our contribution to a modern, sustainable life from the perspective of people. We focus on their individual favorite moments and the commitment of our employees that makes such moments possible. The specially composed song “All these moments” accompanies the campaign and musically conveys our values, courage, community and our joy for the future and is authentically accompanied by pictures of our employees.
