Orders worth EUR 500 million to supply major German and Swiss national railway projects

2026-03-18 |

voestalpine Railway Systems underscores its position as a global leader for railway infrastructure system solutions with orders totaling EUR 500 million from the German (Deutsche Bahn, DB) and Swiss (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, SBB) national railways, for rails, turnouts, and signaling technology. The spectrum of services includes the supply of rail and turnout systems, as well as signaling technology and monitoring applications.

Having recently equipped the “Koralmbahn” railway line in Austria, as well as Egypt’s first high-speed line (“Green Line”), the contracts with DB and SBB once again demonstrate that leading international rail operators trust in voestalpine Railway Systems competence.

We are delighted that these orders will continue our longstanding partnership with the DB and SBB, and that we are contributing to modernize and digitalize Europe’s railway infrastructure with our highly sophisticated products and systems. Our Railway Systems business segment once again demonstrates its growth potential in an economically challenging environment.

DB turns to the rail infrastructure systems from voestalpine Railway Systems for its high-performance rail network

DB is planning over EUR 23 billion in investments to modernize national railway infrastructure in 2026 alone; voestalpine Railway Systems will be supplying DB with premium rails and turnout components. These will be used in projects such as the major renovation of Frankfurt main station, and in upgrading high-performance corridors including the Hamburg–Berlin line.

Expanding rail transport is a key factor in the mobility transition. With our digitalized track and turnout systems, we are helping manage the growing rail transport volumes in Germany more safely and efficiently.

State-of-the-art axle counters for the SBB

Switzerland has also relied on voestalpine Railway Systems expertise for many years. The SBB has recently signed an up to 20-year framework agreement to further digitalize its rail network. By delivering state-of-the-art axle counting systems, which report whether a section of track is free or occupied, for instance, voestalpine Railway Systems is playing an important role in increasing safety on the Swiss rail network, and is becoming a leading supplier of standardized signaling technology (EULYNX).

A service contract has also been concluded for service and diagnosis systems, as well as cybersecurity solutions. “Digital signaling, monitoring, and diagnostic systems are decisive for the performance and safety of critical rail infrastructure. Years of successful cooperation with the SBB are the basis for jointly acting to implement pioneering digital solutions,” says Kainersdorfer.
