GREEN FUTURE: voestalpine EXPANDS CLIMATE PROTECTION OBJECTIVES

Greenhouse gas emissions will be significantly reduced by 2029 throughout the voestalpine Group. These reductions will include emissions from steelmaking, energy purchases and the supply chain. voestalpine receives active support from experts of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Since SBTi was founded in 2015, more than 4,000 companies have committed to reducing their emissions in the long term. Scientific standards and clearly defined measures help participating companies implement ambitious targets to reduce their greenhouse gases.

THREE EMISSION CATEGORIES

Scope 1 includes all the greenhouse gases that originate directly in production. Scope 2 and Scope 3 deal with indirect emissions, such as those from the generation of electricity or the supply of raw materials.

In specific terms, voestalpine plans to reduce its emissions by 30 percent (Scopes 1 & 2) and by 25 percent (Scope 3) by 2029 as compared to the baseline year of 2019. As part of the independent Science Based Target Initiave, this reduction goal will be evaluated for its compatibility with the Paris Climate Agreement and validated after careful assessment.

MORE TRANSPARENCY FOR CLIMATE NEUTRALITY

"In order to be able to provide our stakeholders with the greatest possible transparency and comparability with regard to our climate protection activities, we have decided to submit to a review by the Science Based Targets initiative. Our complex considerations and objectives throughout the entire process chain underscore our commitment to long-term climate neutrality," says Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO of voestalpine AG. The worldwide objective of the Science-Based Targets initiative is to achieve the Paris climate targets and to combine expert knowledge from a wide range of organizations such as the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute und World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).

Expert knowledge creates advantages for all of us, Mother Nature included. My contribution to climate protection is making steel production more sustainable!
